I got a job at the Del Amo Gap! I also interviewed at Forever 21 at Del Amo but that was this past Friday and they haven’t called me back. I had to let Gap know yesterday if I wanted to take the job so I just said yes though I wanted to work at Forever a little more. Orientation is tomorrow. I’m pretty excited just because I’ve never worked retail and because Del Amo gets so many people passing through. Definitely better than last summer’s job stuck in an office with only 4 other people.
This past weekend I did a one-day PeaceJam conference at LA Trade-Tech College with high school kids from all over LA and San Diego. The kids are all high-risk and high-need but they were really psyched about working to change their environments, most of which are gang-ridden so it was really cool. One of the girls in my group had a huge lip ring and a lot of black eyeliner, you know she looked like the type of girl you don’t want to mess with, but at the end of the day she was really excited about the workshops she went to which included one about girls using film as social activism and change. It was just a good day. It was crazy because the main PeaceJam director used to be a gangbanger and he has all these tattoos on his arms so a bunch of the high school guys with tattoos on their arms went up to him to make sure he was alright. Oh, but even crazier, was that the conference was co-sponsored by the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation and the main coordinator on that end was Julie Chavez one of Cesar Chavez’s granddaughters! So that was really cool just working with her.
I feel like I haven’t been doing much this summer but I guess I have been. Just everything is happening at a good pace so I don’t feel bogged down.
I really want to go to San Francisco. Anyone wanna go? I have an aunt who lives in Sunnyvale about 45 minutes away who would probably be willing to house us. She has a big house and no kids. Cynthia and I wanted to road trip anywhere and Ana wants to see a special Frida Kahlo exhibit in SF so hopefully we’ll all be able to go. Either driving or flying. It almost seems that flying would be cheaper just cuz gas is so expensive but it would be more convenient to have a car. Anyways, if we go it’ll be sometime in July or August so I have that to look forward to.
