The first time I saw...

The first time I saw Marie, I was nine. She was not an hour old.

It was a Sunday and we had been at the church when suddenly there was a strange sound. Most of the people didn't notice at first because they simply didn't hear, but I heard it imediately and ran to the back where my parents were. I didn't understand what was happening at first. Papa just said it was all right and brought Mama slowly to our car. And Mama didn't look okay at all and her feet were wet and there was a fruity smell.
On the way to the hospital I slowly realized it was the baby. Papa needed his hands for driving and Mama held her arms tight around her big belly so they didn't say much. But 'birth' and 'hospital' were enough to make me understand. I knew the baby would be born any day and I knew what to say to the nurses once we got to the hospital. My parents had told me everything weeks before again and again.

I sat on a window shelf in the waiting area. Papa asked me if I wanted to go home since it would be a while till the baby was born. But I wanted to wait. Papa and I talked about a lot of things while waiting.

After the baby was born they took me to Mama's room to see her. She was so little. I was really proud of my baby sister. I told her I would teach her everything. Like talking. Everything about the sounds there were in the world. I would play music for her on my clarinet. And I would read stories for her.

At first, I didn't know if she could hear me. She didn't react to what I said. But she didn't really react to signing either. But everybody said she probably could hear and that it was normal for new born babies to not react.

I took good care of my sister. And I read her stories. My reading got better after Marie was born.

One day, when she was maybe a month or two, I called her name and snipped with my fingers while she was looking the other way. She didn't turn her head. I didn't know little babies couldn't turn there heads and I was afraid she couldn't hear me.
I took my clarinet and made a loud sound to test her. Marie started to cry. She could hear. I was so happy, I took her in my arms and danced with her. Marie could hear!
