Michael found that he was suddenly at a loss for words. The ring was in his pocket today, a change from the box in the back of his wardrobe where it had spent the last five months. His hands were shaking, his voice pitched up in the higher notes that he hadn’t heard since he hit his thumb with his da’s hammer when he was nine years old.

“Would you like some butter for your bread?” Susan asked, looking up from where she’d been laying out the luncheon on the ratty old blanket he’d thought to bring at the last minute. What was a picnic without something to put over the wet grass and to stop the roaming ants from getting their fair share of the fixings?

He nodded and cleared his throat. “Nice weather we’ve been having lately.”

Susan looked at him, her face blank of all emotion, before turning to look out from under the lip of rock that protected them from the worst of the storm. “Yes. Lovely. Are you feeling alright?” There was no way to miss her sarcasm.

“Well, lovely for Scotland. We did, after all, almost see the sun this morning.”

It seemed he hadn’t learned his lesson, after all. The reason he’d put the ring away in the wardrobe the first time was that he’d turned into a blathering idiot when he had it in his pocket. He’d assumed, erroneously it seemed, that he’d gotten the courage to carry it with him as he waited for the perfect moment. They were leaving school in four weeks. His window of opportunity was decreasing with every beautiful sunset.

Susan calmly buttered his bread for him as if he was a toddler in need of help cutting up his meal into bit-sized pieces. Instead of feeling foolish, it made him feel slightly overheated. Getting Susan Bones, sarcastic enchantress, to do anything for him made him feel giddy.

“I love you,” he blurted, coloring immediately. When she didn’t say anything - or slap his face, he continued on with slightly more confidence. “I know this is rather sudden-“

He stopped talking when she started laughing, tears starting to run down her cheeks as her merriment got the best of her. Waiting for the giggles to subside, Michael rubbed the ring between his thumb and middle finger. The platinum was cold to the touch, even after all this time in his pocket.

“Sudden?” Susan asked. “I don’t think you can call this sudden, Michael. We’ve been dating exclusively for over a year and you’ve had the ring for at least half that time.”

“You knew? About the ring? All this time?”

She nodded, her smile sweet and full of the one emotion she didn’t show often - happiness. “Why do you think I’ve been trying to get you into romantic situations? I figured you’d eventually get the hint and ask me.”

“So, will you?”

“Ask me properly and we’ll see.”
