“And what happened after that?”

Charlie continued to smooth his hand over her stomach until he had every inch memorized, disregarding her question until he was sure that she was listening to every word he said. “They walked away and we never heard from them again.”

“That is not true,” Tonks said, with half a laugh and a slight frown. “Charlie Weasley, you told me this was a story about dragons and there wasn’t a dragon in the whole thing.”

“Sure there was.” He was too busy trailing his finger around first her right breast and then her left to let her irritation stop him from his desire to have her body memorized by the time she left his bed. There would be too much time for her to think this all through. The odds were high that she wouldn’t be back in his bed tomorrow night for a repeat performance. He needed to make these memories last until he could figure out how to convince her that this was where she needed to stay.

Tonks arched her back, getting as close to his touch as she could before shaking her head. “You didn’t say anything about dragons. I was listening.”

“They were at the edge of the forest. We walked right past them. Didn’t I tell you that part?”

“No,” she panted as he pulled his hand back. He wasn’t sure if she heard anything he said as all her attention seemed to be centered on that appendage. “Tell me again. I’ll listen closer this time and you’ll mention dragons.”

He rolled onto his back so they both could stare at his water-spotted ceiling. “Why don’t you tell me the story?”

There was a pause and Charlie tried not to give into the fear that he’d gone too far. Their relationship seemed to be so predictable that every new step sent either of them into a tizzy of overanalyzing and fear. It was what he was doing right now, as a matter of fact. Would history repeat itself as they stepped back to make sure that this path was the right one?

“So, once upon a time,” Tonks said as she rolled over, crawling astride his body, “there was a group of wanderers who needed to find some sort of treasure.”

“Gilphah metals. It’s not a treasure. They’re a-“ but he couldn’t explain that part with her hand clamped firmly over his mouth.

“This is my story now. You have to be quiet or I won’t let you have any fun at the end. Understand?”

Charlie nodded his head and licked her hand. Instead of shrieking, the inner muscles of her legs tensed. There was a moment of silence as she tried to figure out what part of the story came next.

“Now, there was this metal and… Charlie, don’t make me… no. Do you want me to climb off this bed? Okay, the metal and a group of wanderers and… is this where the dragons come in?

“Not yet,” he gasped as she followed along with the movements he’d used in his story but in a completely different order. When she stopped, he wondered why he was complaining. “Dragons. Tell me about the dragons.”

“They’re scaly-“

“But softer than you’d think their hide would be.”

“And old-“

“Older than sin. Right there, Tonks.”

Tonks nuzzled his chin, the soft skin he’d kissed earlier catching on the roughness of the reddish scruff that he hadn’t taken the time to shave off this morning. “Interesting choice of words. Do you think this is a sin?”

“Not like this, it isn’t. I think we should keep trying until we get to the sin part, though.”

“Shall I come back so we can try again? I think with some good practice, we could-“

“Tell me the story, Tonks. Finish the story,” Charlie begged but found that she was surprisingly strong. He wasn’t able to move her where he wanted her to be. “Please…”

“I’ve been waiting to hear you say that all night long.”
