Title: Halfway to Normal
Fandom: Harry Potter/Charmed crossover
Characters: Tonks, Phoebe
Rating: R
Word Count: 500

Author's Note: This was written for a drabble_redux prompt last year but I never put it up here. More or less, this is here to be archived with the rest of my Tonks stories. This was my first crossover EVER... and I haven't attempted it again until now.

Tonks sat on the beach and wondered if she really was where she was supposed to be. This American beach was different from any that she had ever seen in Britain. It wasn’t bad, just different.

Now that she wasn’t an Auror anymore, she’d had a lot of these moments where she just sat and stared. She wasn’t completely sure how people did this on a regular basis. It was making her completely batty.

“Dora! Are you coming? It’s getting cold.” Tonks jumped as she felt the hand on her shoulder. “Whoa! I was just trying to get your attention but you didn’t seem to be listening. Everything okay?”

This was perhaps the hardest thing for Tonks to deal with. It was bad enough that no one wanted to call her Tonks, choosing the other version of her name because it was more “feminine”, but the sisters liked to talk about their emotions more than she was comfortable with.

“I’m fine, Phoebe.” Tonks knew it wouldn’t always stop her, but she was still the new girl and allowed some distance. She could only imagine what her life was going to be like when they got comfortable with her odd ways.

When the Charmed ones decided they needed a bodyguard, they had searched for the best and they had found her. Not that she had been doing any worthwhile for the last six months. She had caught up on all the puzzles in the back issues of the Daily Snitch and polished her broom until it could be used as a mirror. Occasionally, she had opened the front door to her flat and taken a look around to make sure the building was still standing.

When she had received the note from Molly Weasley asking her if she’d be interested in a job in the States, she had laughed. Three days later, she had found her bags packed and waiting for her by the door - next to the irate Weasley mother.

“You can hide up here, away from everyone who loves you, or you can hide in America. Those are your two options and I’m only letting you take one. I’ll burn you out if I have to.”

And so she found herself on this beach, beside a witch who could feel her feelings, even those she didn’t necessarily know she possessed. The others weren’t too bad, but Phoebe was going to be her undoing and she seemed to sense that right away.

“I know we aren’t the easiest witches to take care of, especially considering we’re used to taking care of ourselves, but we want to be your friends. Molly told us that your life hasn’t been the easiest lately. We’ve had our share of heartache.”

Tonks smiled and wondered what else Molly had told them. “It wasn’t so much the heartache that hurt,” she murmured, “but the abrupt ending of everything I held onto. Just the fact that everything is different and there’s nothing I can do about it.”
