A Saturday, that's for sure

Today was my sister's big yard sale. Mom and I went over to help her out. I made $10 which I was going to use to buy bracelet makings... but I actually bought $60 worth so it was just to defray some of the costs, I suppose

My older cat died yesterday. Well, let's call apples apples and oranges oranges. My cat was brutally terrorized by dogs and my dad had to put her down. He was sitting on the back porch, as was Sheena, and two new dogs to the neighborhood came into the yard and terrorized her until they broke her back. I'm only able to assume what happened here but I'm sure you can, too. One big dog and one Jack Russell... that probably belong to this guy that moved in a couple of months ago down the block. The sad thing is that I think our yard was being protected by the huge boxer that lived next door. Ollie didn't like Sheena (and vice versa) but all he did was bark at her when she got too near the fence. Would he have done the same thing if given half a chance? Maybe. But that fence kept him where he was supposed to be.

Which is what this guy is not doing with his dogs. My cat was killed in HER yard. She wasn't wandering and actually doesn't really wander town. Not like Rory. And she was very old. I think she was up to 15 years old. Maybe older. I doubt very much she was terrorizing anyone at this point in her life. Maybe some birds and voles and mice. She stayed away from other animals, having nothing to do with either Spencer or Rory. She was crotchety by the time both of them came along.

My first thought was Huh. because that is how I roll. I don't react right away. You have to wait to get any reaction.

And of course my second reaction was I'm going to kill the dogs the next time I see them. Where's Dad's gun?

My third thought was Why didn't they go after Spencer? Was she outside? Do I need to be worried about her when we're at Mom and Dad's house? Should I go outside with her at all times now? Would the dogs try to take her on or do they just want to harass cats? Should I be worried about Rory? She plays with Spencer as if she doesn't know that Spencer is a dog... or maybe she does and she doesn't know that she might need to be mean to dogs that come after her.

It was only my fourth thought (about 12 hours after finding out about it) that was sad for her passing. She was a good cat. She had this amazing 8 foot vertical leap (which is the highest we ever saw so who knows if she could jump higher) that would take down a bird just starting to fly off one of the branches in our yard. I got her as a very small kitten only because she was certified to be a mouse-killer and we were having an over abundance that summer. I taught her to be a stealthy assassin and she wasn't every one to cuddle. She's been going downhill the last five years or so. We worry about her from time to time. Her teeth have been bothering her and we were wondering about her eyesight lately. She would start to get all creaky when she walked and then would be fine.

She was a good cat.

And now I should go take a shower because I'm all dirty. It was sweaty sort of day!
