“But she’s so cute. How can you not like this little face? And these eyes. Have you ever seen anything so blue?”
Emma glanced at the animal cuddled in Will’s arms. While she was doing a good job of keeping up the charade, she knew she couldn’t do it forever. Sooner or later, she was going to sneeze and it would all be over. There was no way he’d believe her after her first sneeze.
“Honey? You’re lips are turning blue.”
“Are they?” she squeaked out as she took a tentative breath. It felt good even if every single molecule was riddled with cat dander. It wasn’t a cute animal. It was a killer with blue eyes. Now that Will had adopted this little furball, his apartment would be full of dander and hair. A landmine of cuteness. “I must be anemic.”
“Or you’re cold. I’ll go get you a jacket. I should have known better than to leave that winter open all day. It’s not quite summer yet. I guess I’m just full of wishful thinking today. Here, you can hold Miss Summers while I’m gone.”
The cat hissed as he placed the animal in Emma’s arms. It was as if it knew that Emma didn’t like it, sensing her emotions the same way it knew where a mouse might be hiding. “Miss Summers?”
Will actually blushed. “She’s got wavy dark hair much like Diana Summers so… well… it just seemed appropriate.”
“Isn’t that just the sweetest thing.” But Will wasn’t there to hear her gushing over a name she still didn’t understand while holding a cat she didn’t like. As the cat jumped to the ground, clearly affronted, Emma mumbled, “I don’t like to hurt animals but I won’t be quite so nice next time.”
“Are you and Miss Summers getting along?”
Her only answer was a resounding sneeze the pushed her back against the dusty cushions on the couch. That was one point for the cat. She had to work fast if she was going to get rid of that thing before it got it’s clutches further into Will’s hearts and began to affect her dating life.
