I think the riddle for most people right now lies in whether it was without a doubt the Animus.

Many got a severe case of the flu not long ago.

If this was a decompression attempt, perhaps the tearing and compressing of the space time fabric had some form of effect on them. Why it didn't happen the last time though, I know not.
