Watching the English - The Hidden Rules of English Behaviour by Kate Fox A totally fascinating book all about why the English behave as we do. There's clearly tons of research behind it, even if vast amounts of it was just eavesdropping on almost all possible situations and hours spent observing how we behave in queues, crowds, shops, restaurants etc....
So much of it rings true, and so much is immediately recognizable as English behaviour even if it's something you don't actually do yourself, for example the chapter on Pubs. I try to avoid pubs, and even with my limited experience I could recognize every single point she made. Brilliant.
I read this from cover to cover, but that was rather heavy going and took a while, it would be much better read in smaller doses. Although it is very readable and laugh out loud funny in places.
If you are English, know anyone English and can't understand their humour or self depreciation or constant moaning and talking about the weather, you should read this book and all will become clear!
Could be very useful for Americans writing Harry Potter Fics too.....
