Betting on the Truth

_argustar No one had seen it coming, but everyone had to admit that it wasn’t that surprising that they got together. They’d always been opposites of each other growing up, always fighting, and always knowing the exact way to antagonize each other. So when the self proclaimed future Hokage kissed the last heir to the Uchiha name in the middle of the street, people began laying bets how long it would last before one of them killed the other out of pure frustration.
But as the years passed and the boys grew older-the blond haired scapegoat of the village matured and was promoted to the coveted position of Hokage. His one time rival became his most trusted bodyguard, and it was clear that the relationship-as strange as it resembled their old one before the kiss, was there to stay. The Hokage was bewildered by the slightly frustrated looks he got from time to time, but he wasn’t aware of the money that was collected by the slightly more smug friends of the pair. Their old teachers and mentors in particular managed to haul in quite a tidy stash from the bets.
It was obvious that they were serious when they moved in together; and the Hokage called in for the first sick day of his life. The Godaime took over for that one day, a knowing smile on her face. Close-to-death experiences could really shock a system, and the Hokage almost losing his trusted bodyguard, friend and lover tended to make him evaluate his priorities. And if those priorities involved having his bodyguard not being able to move very far for the next few days, then so much the better for his peace of mind.
As more years passed by and new generations came about, it was hard to imagine a time when the Hokage didn’t have his ‘shadow’ by him-but for those that remembered the Uchiha in their childhood days, it was still somewhat of a shock to see a faint smile on his face at times-and only when he was looking at the Hokage. New bets were being laid about the bodyguard attacking anyone who dared look at their Hokage in the wrong way. Kakashi collected even more money that day before Iruka intervened and called off the betting for fear of more rooms being filled in the hospital than the staff could take care of.
It had been several more years before anyone remembered the Hokage as being the scorn of the village, and no one questioned his relationship with his bodyguard anymore. Not when several watchers caught them sleeping next to each other in the old team 7 training grounds from years ago, both with possessive holds over each other. Even with the one silver strand in the bodyguards hair and the maturity that graced the Hokage’s face, they both could have been teenagers again and newly in love. And what was how the people of Konoha kept them in their minds, even when they were still yelling at each other and grappling in the street; they knew the truth and kept it to themselves.
