Yellow Ribbons

So the other day, I saw this cartoon on the net that really irked me. It was a yellow ribbon, with some really snide comments on it and to the side talking about how the only people who put the yellow ribbons on their cars are ignorant fucks who drive gas-guzzling SUVs and dare to put on yellow ribbons to support the war for oil ( Read more... )

I would have been just as hot if I'd seen that stupid cartoon. Don't have any clue if the folks who put it on are far left or what their political persuasion is, and it wouldn't matter to me what their political beliefs are. They have no compassion and like to think up this assinine buzzword crap to get people riled up. It's crass behavior and they are asses.

What I want to know is where the money for those ribbons goes and if it in any way supports our troops in any meaningful way, or if yet again, someone's capitalistic greed is making money off of other people's pain and suffering. Do these people who feel the need to sport a ribbon on their vehicles actually do *anything* to help the folks fighting in Iraq? I would hope they would take their "caring" to a higher level and actually try to make a difference. It's just too damned easy to buy those magnetic ribbons and think you've done your part. Horse hockey.

I own an older model utility vehicle, not an SUV, but a gas guzzler still the same. My husband wanted it for various reasons, one of them being safety for his children, but I'm not going to list all the reasons we own our vehicle and try to persuade folks out of their notions. When folks start bitching about SUV's, I just figure I'm lumped in with the rest, and typically walk away from the conversation so as not to make any more enemies.

We all make assumptions about other people based on how we feel, and that even changes from moment to moment. I have no doubt that some of the incidents I deal with on the road are because of people who are pissed off about my car and their assumptions.

Fuck 'em. I know my worth and what I do for my planet, and if folks want to judge me based on the vehicle I drive, well, that's their problem.
