HP Alternity

Alternity is reaching the climax of its Year Two plot. If you are a Potter fan and are interested in reading a journal-style rpg that's retelling the full seven-year story in a twisty, through-the-looking-glass universe in which Voldemort survived and came to power (as the UK's Lord Protector), now would be a great time to take up reading. Or to return to reading if you followed it in the past but have slipped away.

If you are familiar with the books, it should be relatively easy to appreciate the respun plot. There are marked differences, of course, all stemming from Voldemort's having interpreted the prophecy differently all those years ago. (An introduction with links to other game summaries can be found here.)

What's different? 1. Harry Marvolo was brought up as the Lord Protector's 'son'. Raised largely by the Malfoys, Harry's established friends are Draco Malfoy, Pansy Parkinson, and Hydra Lestrange. Also, Harry is a Slytherin: when Harry arrived at Hogwarts and was Sorted into Gryffindor House, his father overruled the Hat.
2. Sirius Black was never sent to Azkaban, but did flee the country in the confusing period immediately after the Ministry fell to Voldemort. In exile on the continent, Sirius took up a new identity as Nigel Cullendon, international Quidditch commentator. He remains a member of the Order and is its most important operative abroad, running an export business as a front for smuggling. His other important contribution is as the author of periodic Grim Truth essays in the journals, which expose the falsehoods and crimes of the Protector's regime. His brother, Regulus Black is still alive and, although he also fled, he has returned to an uneasy position in Voldemort's service.
3. Dumbledore escaped beyond the wards at the same time Sirius escaped, but they went their separate ways and Dumbledore's whereabouts are still unknown.
4. Severus Snape's whereabouts are unknown.
5. The Order has survived Dumbledore's absence and is one of several unconnected resistance cells inside the UK. Its members have designed a spell to break the magic of the journals (distributed to all of the Lord Protector's magical subjects) in order to make protected posts to one another. Bill Weasley crafted the Order Lock spell; Bill is the Order's operative inside the Ministry's Communications Department.
6. Most Muggles were magically neutralized when Voldemort took over the country; colloquially, these people are called 'Sleepers'. Those Muggles who did not fall into magical stasis were herded into prison camps around the UK; they are used as slave labour.
7. Muggleborns were also rounded up and enslaved. Their wands were snapped, and it is a capital crime for a Muggleborn to perform magic. Hermione Granger and Terry Boot are so-called Mudblood slaves at Hogwarts. (But Hermione is a member of the Order.)
8. The Protectorate has obviously encouraged blood prejudice. Purebloods assume their superiority; halfbloods have been marginalised (and some halfblood children have been taken from their families to be fostered by purebloods in hopes of reintegrating the next generation as well-indoctrinated citizens).
9. The ISS Lock: In this oppressive surveillance society, the Weasley twins have created their own secret writing system, complete with an age-lock so that only their group of under 18s can see posts written under the 'I Solemnly Swear That I Am Up To No Good' subject line. The group includes Muggleborns, Terry Boot and Hermione Granger, the twins, Lee Jordan, Neville Longbottom, Ron Weasley, and Sally Anne Perks, a halfblood Slytherin.
The game is in its second year, paralleling the Chamber of Secrets plot. This year, the Protectorate has not only worried over the petrification attacks happening at Hogwarts, but the population has suffered a terrible epidemic, which grew out of a secret Department of Mysteries experiment to make the enslaved population more docile. Meanwhile, the Lord Protector is undertaking ominous secret experiments of his own.

All three plots are coming to a head as the end of Harry Marvolo's second year of school approaches. I invite you to take a look at HP Alternity today!
