books

Towards the end of Alan Bennett's The Uncommon Reader, which I finished reading yesterday, the queen remarks that books ... seldom prompt a course of action. Books generally just confirm you in what you have, perhaps unwittingly, decided to do already. You go to a book to have your convictions corroborated. A book, as it were, closes the book.

I can't decide just how bleak to feel about the fact that I think Bennett's queen is largely right.
