If you didn't know this about me before, know this now. I'm an Olympics addict. (Ok, a sports addict, but that's a given.)
I watch pretty much every single competition that the Olympics have to offer if available to me on tv. I've been known to tape the entire 16 days of events leaving me with literally boxes of tapes from the past 4 Olympic Games ('00, '02', 04', and '06). Don't be surprised if I disappear come August this year.
So as a result of watching all the broadcasts, I grow attached to certain commentators or announcers.
So when I found at the Jim McKay
passed away today, I was crushed. Sure, I never got to really see the Olympics while he was the host, but still, he was the iconic voice behind "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat." for ABC's Wide World Of Sports.
And Mr. McKay did show up on the past couple Olympic Games providing really good human interest stories in these what felt like fireside chats (I guess during the winter games especially) along side Bob Costas for NBC. So much so that NBC asked permission from ABC to use him for the last Winter Games, he's that much of a sports broadcasting icon.
So, this may mean nothing to you, but for me, I'm truly sadden to know that Jim McKay has passed away.
:(
May he rest in peace.
