Joannie Rochette.
She lost her mother a few days ago, and I think it's so amazing that she had the courage to come out and skate a personal best in the short program tonight! I teared up and so did everyone else! Scott Hamilton couldn't even speak! When I heard his quiver, I lost it some more. I could see the grief reveal itself after the end of the program and my heart went out to her. She had a beautiful program, beautiful jumps, and it was a wonderful performance from beginning to end.
Oh, I LOVE Dan Jansen. He was interviewed by Bob Costas right before Joannie skated and he told Bob that he sent an email to Joannie reaching out to her. Knowing what she's going through with his own personal experience losing his sister back in 1988, I thought that such a good thing to do. Well done Dan Jansen. Well done.
Kim Yu-Na vs. Mao Asada.
This is the premiere event and it totally lived up to its billing! Mao skated first and had a great program with a triple axel double toe combination! Pretty awesome. Then Kim Yu-Na comes out and totally KILLS her performance. Triple triple combination, clean jumps, and good spins. Loved her James Bond homage. Yu-Na scores a new world record for the short with a 78.50 pts, so clearly Yu-Na wins this round. I look forward to the free skate!
Mirai Nagasu.
I just think she's adorable! She has a lot charm and is just cute! It sucks that she couldn't get her triple triple combination in, but she skated cleanly and I LOVE her spins. I think she and Caroline Zhang should have a spin off. I adore her spirals as well! Skating to the music from the Pirates of the Carribean was a great idea! :)
Overall, the short programs tonight were great! I'm rooting for Yu-Na to win and for what Joannie is going through, I hope she has a great skate. I really hope Mirai has an awesome free skate and no downgrades!
