our newly named queer grrrls dinner club had our second meeting last night at
Coco500. those of you top chef followers may recognize this place as the former employer of top chef season 4's
Jennifer.
here's what we enjoyed (or didn't):
cocktails: the presbyterian (bourbon, ginger beer, lemon, seltzer) -- pretty tasty. strong bourbon flavor. went down smooth.
sour grapes (grappa, lemon, espresso bitters, organic sugar) -- i personally didn't care for this, and
eestiplika said it wasn't what she expected.
daily agua fresca (honeydew melon, orange and lime) -- fresh flavor
fried green beans -- excellent. the most amazing thing was that the batter was so light and airy that these still tasted like really good green beans.
truffled squash blossom flatbread with parmesan & sea salt -- best dish we had in my opinion. i later wished i had ordered another one to go when we left.
summer purslane salad: persian cucumbers, radishes, boquerones, lemon parmesan dressing - great fresh salad, excellent dressing
sweet cayanne peppers with ricotta salata -- just ok.
sonoma duck breast served over house made pasta, zucchini and summer squash, mint pesto sauce -- the duck was simple and good, but the pasta and squash with mint pesto was actually better than the duck!
desserts: strawberry shortcake with rhubarb compote, creme chantilly -- really. disappointing. the shortcake was just bad. the rhubarb was tasty and the berries just ok. according to the Yelp reviews I was reading this morning, we were not the only ones let down by this dessert.
"fifty-fifty" (vanilla panna cotta with cherry gelee) -- also excellent. the flavors and textures were so smooth and delicious.
