If there's one place in this world that I feel a real, spiritual connection too it's Mt. Ruapehu in the Central North Island of New Zealand.
For the non-kiwi readers - look it up, I'm feeling much too relaxed to indulge in some link-foo to edumacate you on NZ geography. All you need to know, really, is that it's an active volcano, it's got ski-fields, and our annual family trip when I was a kid was always a skiing jaunt up there as Dad was a volunteer ski-patroller for 20-odd years.
I worked up there myself for about 5 years, and loved it, but stopped when the mountain literally erupted on me, twice.
As such - it's not a home, but it is a sanctuary. It's good to get up there, meet up with some old friends in the community, and just generally get the fuck away from everything for a few days.
I went for a bit of a hike, way back country, and just relaxed for the first time in a long, long time. Something about standing on a mountain, looking out over the country and hearing nothing around at all just really makes me feel... calm
I don't know how long this sense of serenity will last, but while it's here - I feel good.
