a different kind of social gathering

A girl I met from church invited me to a BBQ at her apartment via Facebook.  She's from Cameroon, a small country in Africa (yep, i searched it in Wikipedia, hihihi).  Her parents work for the UN so she's been living in different countries, and is now studying at Melbourne.

Anyway, after almost getting lost due to public transportation mixups, I finally got to her place.  There was a small group of people, friends and acquaintances she knew from around Uni.  The thing is, no one knew everyone but almost all of them speak French!  Apparently French is the official language in Cameroon, so she speaks it very fluently.  Then there was a guy from Peru who can speak French, and his Colombian friend who lived in France for 15 yrs who's just visiting his Aussie girlfriend.  Then there was this exchange student from France who is actually from Guinea.  Then this girl who is taking Commerce/Arts (majoring in French) and the other girl who is half French, half Aussie, who just spent 9 months in France last yr.

Grabe...I usually spend time with Asian people, mostly people who speak Mandarin or Korean, so I can understand half of what they're saying when they're not speaking too fast.  Plus I've gotten used to listening to Korean with all the Korean series I've watched.

But being in a roomful of people speaking French! Ibang experience! As in no idea what they were talking about.  Pero masaya siya pakinggan.

So my friend put on a DVD of what I would call OAM (Original African Music).  There were songs from all the different African countries (mostly rap/dance).  Super funny.  They had this song about women's BOOBS!  It was a traditional song which they turned into a dance remix of some sort, complete with choreography, with all these women pointing at their boobs and men pointing at the women's boobs.  It wasn't meant to be offensive, they just appreciate boobs in general.

The guy from Guinea had on his laptop different songs from Africa, one was inspired by the bird flu and SARS epidemic.  And he showed us the dance for that, some sort of chicken dance (bird flu kasi).  In conclusion, African people LOVE to dance.
