Whatever happened to games?

It's time to post again, and I still haven't started my SGA rewatch so maybe I should write something deep, like pondering the meaning of life.  Eh, the best I can do is whatever happened to games?

I'm not talking about video games, but I used to play those too when I was a kid and had a super nintendo.  No, I'm talking about the games I used to sit down and play with my friends and family, like monopoly, sorry, uno, old maid, battleship, scrabble, etc.  Every now and again it happens, but not like it used to.  Maybe that kind of game playing dies out as you grow up.  You do it less and less, and then you just don't do it.  I've been thinking about trying to start up a club or group or something for adults that want to play card and board games, but it's hard to find a time when everybody can get together regularly.  And that could be it.  When I was a kid, I obviously lived with my family and saw most of my friends at school everyday.

I asked one of my friends what she thought about it, and she said she's all for playing from time to time but not regularly.  Instead, she's really into World of Warcraft, which even after she explained it to me I can't say that I really understand.  She calls it "video game crack," and she didn't seem to see my offer of playing regular games as a way to kick the habit.  She suggested that I try WoW.  Well, I downloaded the crack to see what it was all about since they offer the first 20 levels for free.  Mm, I can't say that I'm addicted at all, but I also can't say that I tried very hard.

I created my avatar person, and then I was given the task of killing 6 little forest animals.  I was bad at it.  While I was still getting used to the controls, the little things were just hopping all around me.  One of them literally sat in front of my face.  That was the one I killed... eventually.

While it may be fun and interactive as one moves up in the levels, I don't think I'm cut out for WoW.  For now I guess I'll just stick to mahjong, solitaire, and the occasional sit-down game with friends when we're all interested and have the time.

Tomorrow I think I'll post some movie reviews for the new Snow White movie and The Avengers.  I've been meaning to.

games, gaming
