(firstly: I am just back from a couple days visiting family, so I am very backed up on flist. Basically, if it did not go to my e-mail, I did not see it. I am catching up! But slowly.)
I got three fics this Yuletide! :D :D :D And two of the fandoms I nominated, Knitting Anthropomorphic and Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, got lots of fics! Also, I ended up writing a fic in every fandom I offered, which is a first for me. :D :D :D
I got two Discworld fic and a Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell fic. The Discworld fics were both take-offs on the same prompt, which was the prompt that kicked me in the head to remind me that I wanted Discworld. It was, in short: Carrot's a female dwarf.
The first fic was:
On Being Female (1141 words) by
NomadChapters: 1/1
Fandom:
Discworld - Terry PratchettRating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Carrot Ironfoundersson, Samuel Vimes
Summary:
It began, as did so many bewilderments small and large, with a declaration by Captain Carrot.
IT'S LIKE THE AUTHOR READ MY MIND. There is not capslock in the world for this. It's Carrot and Vimes, and Carrot telling Vimes about Dwarf Women's Guild. Which Carrot is a member of.
Yeah, I'm just going to quote my comment:
THIS IS BRILLIANT AND AMAZING!!! It's like you read my mind, author. ♥ All the little bits here, I love them so much! Especially this:
"Well, once word went out in The Ankh-Morpork Times it all rather cascaded*. We thought it was important to involve some of the more traditional dwarfs as well as the progressives, to show that there's a whole spectrum of being female - that it's not just about dressing and acting in certain way, but about claiming the word for yourself, even if it's only in your head."
YES YES SO MUCH! One thing I've been disappointed about in the canon was "being female = skirts and makeup and such", as if you can't do one without the other and one requires the other.
Okay, and not to be quoting the entire fic back at you, but also this SO MUCH
"As I say, sir, I thought it was important for those of us who still follow traditional dwarf practises to join the guild as well, to demonstrate that claiming a statement of gender doesn't necessarily have to mean abandoning the old ways."
"And you're stating that you're... female." Well. Dwarfs did things differently, didn't they? And Carrot... Carrot did things very differently. Vimes rallied. Halfway. "Will there need to be, erm... pronouns?" He wasn't sure how well the city as a whole would cope with pronouns, though if anyone could get the people of Ankh-Morpork blushing and stammering apologetically every time they messed up, it was Captain Carrot.
"Oh, no, sir." Carrot looked slightly alarmed. "That's a bit... drastic, don't you think? I mean, I know some of the women feel it's an important part of femaleness, but, er-"
"You'd rather... assert your right to be acknowledged as female by not doing anything traditionally associated with being female," Vimes said.
The captain radiated relief. "Yes, that's it exactly, sir."
I am all asquee. Thank you so much!!!
Basically: this fic makes me happy in my "to put it politely, me and gender aren't on speaking terms" heart. YOU SHOULD READ IT.
The second fic was also taking off of that prompt and went in a different direction and is also really awesome:
Strange Customs (1058 words) by
EnochiaChapters: 1/1
Fandom:
Discworld - Terry PratchettRating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Carrot Ironfoundersson
Summary:
"Carrot's a dwarf. And, as a dwarf, she doesn't see why being a woman is any kind of problem."
This is second person! :D :D :D It's introspective and wonderful. ♥
And the third one is a result of present shaking in the #yuletide chat. I was shaking Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell fics and mentioned in chat that none of the fics had the Raven King. (This was using tagged characters, so it did not show the excellent
John Childermass's Last Employer, which has the Raven King but isn't tagged with him, and also that fic might not have been uploaded at that point anyway.)
So Kaesa wrote Raven King fic! :D :D :D
The Resurrection of William of Lanchester (2554 words) by
KaesaChapters: 1/1
Fandom:
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell - Susanna ClarkeRating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: Major Character Death
Relationships: Thomas of Dundale/William of Lanchester
Characters: Thomas of Dundale, William of Lanchester, Catherine of Winchester - Character, The Raven King
Summary:
Sometime in the thirteenth century, Thomas of Dundale and William of Lanchester quarreled with the Raven King over the resurrection of Henry Barbaratus, the son of a traitor.
This is one of those "the squee cannot be expressed in written forms" sorts of things. This is an expanded footnote! Which has magic and female point of view and the Raven King just failing completely at being human until he gets a hit on the head, and I think Thomas/William is my new OTP for this fandom. :D :D :D (Other than Raven King/drama, of course.) Note that there's character death, but then he gets better. (It's tagged "Major Character Undeath" :D)
You can also read this fic if you don't know the fandom, because it's a backstory footnote fic and has nothing to do with the plot of the book. All you need to know: Northern England is ruled by the Raven King, a magician who was raised by fairies and who may or may not be named John Uskglass. Thomas of Dundale was in the Raven King's army when he went around a-conquering so has been with him from day one, William of Lanchester is his seneschal, and Catherine of Winchester is one of his students.
ALSO THE RAVEN KING WILL USE THE CHAOS OF RAVENS WHENEVER HE DAMN WELL PLEASES AND HE DOESN'T CARE THAT IT MAKES SUCH A MESS.
(No, really, Raven King/Drama OTP).
