Finished!!!!!

Jul 13, 2009 16:20

An apology to start off with,
I have been extremely rubbish about commenting and replying to comments the past week or so. The results of a combination of being out and about more than usual, the barbarous summer heat, and being unreasonably tired out from school. I think that once Friday rolls around and the summer holidays start then I shall be better about it.

Also,
I have three or four posts that I wanted to write up, about 1)Olly Cat and his summer lab, 2) Higurashi no naku koro ni which seems to be an anime about how it's nice to play through a game more than once, 3) the Star Trek film and the new Romulan look, 4) the Demon Lord Mara and whether it's okay to find him funny since I'm clearly not fourteen years old. Those posts can wait until I'm not suffering from Lazyitis.

But more importantly
The picture I've been drawing is finished!

I learned an immense amount while drawing this.

In certain ways, it is the simplest drawing I've made in months. For composition, anatomy and so on, it doesn't get much simpler than a straight-on head-and-shoulders portrait.

In other ways, it took me miles out of familiar territory with the new colouring techniques I was trying to put into practice. A lot of the methods that were new to me came from tutorials like the ones at furiae and the deku shrub tutorial and the rest was just me clumsily fumbling around until I found something that worked. Jeez; before I read the deku shrub tutorial, I didn't even know what Transparency Locking a layer does. It makes me realise just how uneducated I am when it comes to Photoshop and what it can do. I might invest in a book about how to actually use Photoshop, but the vast majority of English-language books on PS are about photography rather than drawing. I do see tantalizing examples of books in the shops here which are about drawing using PS, but they're all written in Elvish runes and my decoder ring is slow. Maybe I should just upgrade my decoder ring before I try to upgrade my PS skills.

Anyway. Enough of that. I came here to say that I finished this thing I've been doing.

The full, uncropped version:

However, I tried cropping it down to cut out the boring bits and I think it might look better like this:

or like this:

At the moment, I'm leaning towards the last one. Even though it makes me vaguely sad to think that I'm cutting out huge areas of the drawing, it just seems to look better this way.

If you see something I've done catastrophically wrong, please point it out to me now before I put it up on Pixiv and DevArt and so on.
