Closer

"Hey. Are you there?" Luhan peers at his laptop screen. There's quiet crackling and then, "yeah!" A video screen pops up and all he can see is the very pixelated face of Yixing, his boyfriend. "How're things back home?" Luhan asks, drawing his comforter tighter around him. His temporary apartment in Korea was very small, and run-down. There was no heating, only a few light bulbs, and little-to-no hot water.

"Everything's okay here. Your mom dropped by yesterday to bring me soup, and she said she was going to send you a care package-shit I don't think i was supposed to tell you." Luhan laughed into the monitor as Yixing mumbled to himself about being, "a dip-shit space cadet," something Luhan had called him a few years back.

"What about you? How are you faring over there in South Korea?" Yixing himself was wearing a thin, ribbed tank top - even just looking at him made Luhan feel even colder. He took a small sip of his coffee before replying.

"I'm okay too. But I miss you a lot." A sad smile graced his soft features and he continued on. "I've made friends though, lots of them. Everyone at my school is really nice, and there's a cute little cafe around the corner from my building that I'll take you to when you visit!" Everything is silent for a moment, before Luhan looks at the screen in front of him, and sees barely-there tears running down Yixing's face. "Hey, Yixing, don't cry," Luhan said, although he, too, was on the verge of tears.

"How can you say that when you're crying too," Yixing laughs out, his voice quivering. Luhan put a hand to his cheek and felt wetness. He hadn't even noticed the tears spill over.

"Yixing, I miss you." Luhan wipes his face dry with his sleeve, but its only a few seconds later when his cheeks are stained with tears again.

"I miss you too, Lu." They sit there crying for a few seconds before Luhan says, "I should probably go, it's getting late," tears still running down his face.

"Bye, I love you. Let's talk again soon." Yixing runs a hand through his bed-head, and hangs up the call before Luhan can reply.

Luhan falls back onto his mattress and lies there, staring at the ceiling, for who-knows-how-long trying to calm his tears. Eventually, everything fades.

-

Luhan wakes up to loud pounding on his apartment door, with a dull throbbing in his head and sticky cheeks. He's still kind of disoriented as he makes his way to the door, comforter still wrapped around him.

"Surprise." Luhan's jaw drops. Standing outside his door, at 6 in the morning, is a very tired-looking Yixing, suitcases in hand. Luhan still has his mouth open when Yixing walks past him into the apartment, sets his bags down on the ground, and sits down on the folding lawn chair Luhan has in his living room. Then Luhan gathers his senses.

"You're..........here...?" Luhan meant it as a statement, but his voice squeaked a little at the end and it came out like a question.

"Yeah. Now we're closer."
