On days like today, when I'm immobile and sit watching new, fluffy show pile up on old layers of frozen slush, I wonder what it must have been like for my mom. Despite my own quasi-Southern upbringing, I did have the opportunity to be exposed to weather like this more than once during my childhood. Not Mom, who grew up in Florida. The first day she saw snow at William and Mary, she told me, she couldn't do any work all day. (And she was a lot more productive and motivated that I am in general.) I can't imagine not ever having seen snow until age 18 or 19 and then suddenly being surrounded by it in an environment where you have to walk to several different buildings in the course of a day. It must have been amazing.
