Important (Rhetorical) Question

Can someone please explain why Evita is such a kick-ass movie?

Really. I didn't like it that much the first time I saw it, and kind of liked it less the more I learned about Latin America.

Per my discussion with Lindsay and Megan last night, the music is so odd, dissonant and anachronistic, there's nothing about it that fits with Argentina culture or music and it seems so out of place. And I'm not such a fan of opera.

But it works so damn well - the mixture of classic rock and traditional ballads and how it makes you feel alive. And as melodramatic as it is, you do see the effects of Peronism that I'm sure you never could in a play. Populism is craaazy.

I even sympathize with Evita and she's such a paradox in this movie. Not to mention how hot Antonio Banderas is.

And there's a song about coups! What's not to love?
