You get the feeling when you watch these shows like Ace of Cakes and Amazing Wedding Cakes that the cakes look better than they taste? I don't believe I've ever had fondant, but I can't imagine that taste-wise it'd compare to a light whipped icing, buttercream, or whatever.
They never discuss taste at all, in fact, some of the shows I've seen they only decorate and actually purchase the sheet cakes from another bakery. I remember when someone on my friends list was planning her wedding she described some of the delicious cakes she'd tasted with raspberry or cream filling and the variety of flavors they offered. I never see anything like that on these shows. Come to think of it, I never see anything but white cake for the most part.
At any rate, I think that given the choice I'd rather have a simple cake that tasted awesome than one that looked awesome. I mean, for the amount of money you spend on the things they ought to be the best cakes you've ever eaten. I guess you wouldn't have wedding pictures of
a really nifty looking cake, but you'd have memories of one that tasted so good it'd haunt you the rest of your days!
