The concert was amazing as expected. Not quite as good as Madison, Wi during the Lateralus tour, but almost.
I got to hang out backstage for 20 minutes or so while they were checking the "credentials" on my photo pass. While I was there the concert security dragged a large drunken fan in a ripped up shirt out the backdoor. Adam Jones was there to thank them for their hardwork and I introduced myself afterwards. He's a nice guy from what I could tell. Didn't blow me off, his wife? (they were holding hands) was with him, pretty woman. Rockstars wife, what do you expect?
After Adam left I was chatting with one of the bouncers and he said "It was probably Adam's wife. Rockstars don't hold hands with groupies" as he cracked a broad, front tooth missing grin.
Not long after my encounter with Adam a cute girl rode by on a large banana yellow bicycle, vintage 1950's, ringing (ring ring) the bike's bell. Then the band's road cook showed up to presumably make the bands post concert meal. He was covered in tattoos and fit the perfect picture of a roadie/cook. His assistant wheeled in a couple minutes later with a 5 foot stack of pots and pans on one of those surfboard/skateboards. I couldn't help feeling like I was witnessing a surreal circus side show during my backstage adventure.
After clearing security I was escorted to the pit area, between the barricade and the stage, where I waited another 10 minutes for the band to come out. I can't describe how fun it was to stand there watching 15,000 Tool fans, knowing I had the best seat in the house for the first song AND I had permission to take pictures!
Then all hell broke loose as the band took the stage and broke into Stinkfist for the first song. Yet again it was surreal to be standing there taking pictures as the best band in the world rocked out to a screaming soldout arena.
Now for the bad news: I wasn't allowed to use flash, it was semi dark on stage, and my lens has a shitty fstop. This means all the pictures are blurry and dark. But I will see what I can do with them in photoshop. I have a lot of people requesting to see them.
After the song I was escorted to guest services where I checked in my camera. Then I headed down to the general admission floor entrance to enjoy the rest of the concert. Good times.
Pictures possibly incoming sometime this week.
