howdy.
yesterday jordan and i took part in the national capital race weekend. the marathon started at 6:30am and the half two hours later. we're talkin' about 9000 runners. it went off like clockwork. there's so much intelligence in how these runs are set up. here's a couple examples...
you guess what 15-minute bucket you'll finish the race in. that corresponds to a colour, then you go to the "corral" for that colour. the corrals are stacked in order and run for 1km down the street. this is so that faster runners are in the front and it's less of a push & shove match at the start with competitive people trying to get free & clear to get their times.
you get this little chip in your shoe. it takes a while to get to the start line when there's 6000 people running. when you cross the start there's a mat you run over and that reads your chip and reports that you have started the race. this is why there is a "gun time" and a "chip time". the gun is the official start, but your chip tracks your personal start. the same works for the end.
anyways, it was a great experience. jordan has a much better power-to-weight ratio than i do, so his legs carry him a lot further. i'm about 225 and 6'5'' he's about 165 and 6'1''. i have much bigger heavier legs, but it's all about build. every pound you have above the waist is like a lead weight on your back the whole way. proud to say though:

yup, i was pretty close to ass-last. however, there's both the marathon and half marathon finishing at the same time, so 6000 runners, 3336 doing my race. i have not really been training for it as a runner, but i've been cycling back and forth to kanata 3 times a week for a 50Km round trip each time. my cardio never gave out. 22Km straight, no stops, never gave up or gave in and walked it. that's my furthest non-stop run ever. no charley horses, no cramps, but a whole lot of pain and muscles complaining.
to quote jordan... "that, was a severe beating".
next year, i'll do much better, but i'm damn proud of this year.
