Summer doldrums

I'm killing time while I wait for things on the stove. I'm making some clam chowder (not just heating up a canned version) because Tim's had a hankering for it lately. I love clams, so it doesn't take much to convince me, and I usually keep some canned ones around since they're fairly cheap. So yeah, I prefer Manhattan clam chowder, but it'll be New England since Tim prefers that, and I like it well enough.

As usual, we're sick of being broke. But, I do want us to try really hard to stay close to this minimalist living expenses budget once our finances get better in the fall. Then maybe we'll have a better cushion for next summer. Of course, it's easier to remain minimalist when things are slower in the summer and I have more time to make cheap-but-time-consuming dishes instead of buying short cuts.

Tim had orientation at UL yesterday. He's registered for classes now and even seems a bit excited. I am excited for him, and I enjoy the idea of going to campus together and maybe running into each other now and then between classes.

The summer session ends on Wednesday. I like the class well enough, but I'll be glad to stop seeing them. I don't like teaching composition classes very much. I can do it, and it is sometimes enjoyable, but it's not my passion. It's more fun to teach subjects I have more enthusiasm for. Of course, they still haven't told us what we're teaching in the fall. Word is that we won't get that assignment until about a week and a half/one week before the fall semester starts. Argh. There are some things I miss from UMKC, where you got your fall assignment in the spring and then had the entire summer to plan.

Not a lot to post, really. I've been working on poetry and even some fiction lately. I get to have a workshop with the editor of _The Fairy Tale Review_ on Thursday. She's applying for a writer in residence job here, and I really hope she gets it. I also hope that she finds my story at least decent.

Also, if I'd been living in KC, I might have been able to go to the Tori Amos concert. But, I guess it's worth it.

tim, school shit, teaching, summer
