Chapter 3 - A Chance Encounter…
‘Today will be the day that the cherry blossom of Konoha reborn…’ thought Sakura, determination lurking in the depths of her eyes. Yet, after a while, she sighed - knowing that it was not going to be as easy as she thought it out to be. After all, she had spent years idolizing and admiring Sasuke - if only, it was that easy to cast away that information; just like that…
Sakura was so deep in thoughts that she failed to notice her surroundings and had ended walking straight into Hyuuga Neji. Initially, she thought she had walked into a wall - but it didn’t take her long enough to figure out that it was the firm chest of a man that she had went smack against.
“Oh… I’m so sorry; I was not paying attention to the surrounding…” Sakura started to apologize; when she finally took noticed of the person she had walked into.
Neji said nothing but simply ‘hn…’ in response, for a while - he looked as if he wanted to walk off. Eventually, he stayed around for a while - while Sakura settled herself on a bench nearby, observing the scenery.
Although, Sakura appeared to be observing the scenery - in actual fact, she was actually observing the Hyuuga genius - Neji. Sure, they both knew one another but they had never once engaged in any particular conversation; and Sakura knew nothing of Neji - other than those of common knowledge. On the other hand, Naruto was someone whom gets along with the genius Hyuuga - then again, Sakura was willing to bet on the fact that Naruto would managed to get along with each and everyone; despite the former’s shadowed past.
Sure, people bullied Naruto in the past - but they had now all opened up their eyes to Naruto’s true nature. Naruto, in his own naïve way had managed to worm his way into everyone’s heart - even Gaara, of the desert; was willing to accommodate Naruto’s way of doing things to a certain degree. Not to forget, Sasuke… even the now traitor of Konoha - used to be paying constant attention to Naruto.
The thought of Sasuke caused Sakura to sigh, even while she had vowed to forget about the crush she had for years - Uchiha Sasuke, had still managed to worm his way back into her thoughts.
Uchiha Sasuke, the sole survivor of the Uchiha clan - a genius, cool and aloof. Hyuuga Neji, the genius of the Hyuuga clan, cool and arrogant. They both had their similarities and differences; and they both possessed their respective ultimate limit skills - in terms of the Sharingan and the Byakugan, respectively.
While Sasuke survived on his instincts for revenge; Neji simply wanted to prove the main clan of Hyuuga - wrong. Eventually, Neji accomplished his goals; but Sasuke, on the other hand, fell into the trap of power-seeking. Regardless of what they repeatedly told Sasuke, the former paid no heed to their advice. Adamant on seeking revenge on Uchiha Itachi, Sasuke set off for the hidden village of Sound - seeking out power from one of the legendary sannin, Orochimaru.
/Ironic, team 7 was basically a repeat of the former sannin…/ Sakura thought.
Previously, the sannin had been trained by the third hokage. Now, Tsunade was the fifth Hokage - while she, Haruno Sakura, was working under Tsunade’s direct orders. Naruto, on the other hand, was constantly training with the second sannin - Jiraiya. Needless to say, Sasuke went on to the lair of the snakes - seeking the third sannin, Orochimaru for power.
Sakura was deep in her thoughts that she had not noticed that Neji was long gone, but in replacement, Naruto was now watching out for her. It was not until, she felt Naruto shaking her back to her senses - did she finally noticed the blond boy presence.
“Naruto? Since when did you come back?” Sakura asked.
“This morning, the first thing I did was to visit Neji.” The kitsune-like boy confessed.
“Aa…” Sakura made a knowing sound, before musing out loud. “I wonder what Sasuke-kun is doing now…”
In front of Naruto, there was no need to act. Having been on the same team for so long, they each knew one another pretty well. Sakura knew Naruto, despite having moved on, was still hoping to have a chance to confront Sasuke, one day. Honestly, she was hoping for that, too. Only, she had no idea what she would do if she did meet
Sasuke.
“Naa… Sakura-chan, do you know its’ not safe for you to be staying out so late?” Naruto suddenly asked, startling Sakura from her thoughts.
“Huh?” Sakura blinked, not catching Naruto’s hint.
“Its’ already late at night, I was only passing through here … when Neji told me to keep watch over you. Since, you were spacing out and all… I didn’t think he wants to risk his neck by coming near you. Who knows what else you can do after working with Tsunade for so long.” Naruto said, as he shrugged.
“Aa… I’m going, don’t worry … I’ll be fine.” Sakura responded with a smile.
“Need I walk you back?” Naruto suggested cheekily, only to be punched on the head.
“No, but thank you! I can handle such trivial things myself.” Sakura told Naruto with a smile, grateful for Naruto’s comfort.
