Camelot - Episode 10: Reckoning - THE FINALE

When this show started ten weeks ago i was prepared for the worst. The team that had put it together had done the Tudors and that show was pretty well done considering they did it all in four seasons. However I was still sceptical because the thing with the Arthurian legends is that nothing is ever 100 percent proven so it’s easy to play fast and loose. When I saw who they picked as Arthur, Morgan and Merlin I also really was not that impressed. I had no idea what to expect from this show, but all in all, I was prepared for the worst.

After episode one well, all that changed. The show blew me away and I loved it. Sure it’s not perfect but it wasn’t as horrible as I had envisioned either. And after the series finale well i love it just that much more. Of all ten episodes this one was the best of them all!!! The last fifteen minutes had been so engrossed as so many Arthurian classics were foreshowed to follow in season 2. Also there were quite a few shocking moment s which I certainly did not expect.

First off it picks up where it left off with Arthur facing Harwell’s army alone. He gets crafty and creates some traps for them and managed to pick six or seven off on his own. The way Jamie played this really impressed me. He transformed from Arthur from boy to man. The more Excalibur drew blood the more he changed, the look in his eyes at some points was almost a little frightening, but in a good way. I love that they finally did what I hoped and showed Arthur as a raw passionate fighter. Arthur loses Excalibur to one of Harwells men as Morgan has asked them to bring it to her after her brother is killed. She needs it to take the crown. Without the sword Arthur is no different showing that it’s not the weapon that makes this Arthur of legend. Also Arthur discovers the truth, that it is his hos own sister who has sent the men to kill him. The look in his eyes when the realization set it gave me such shivers! The bond between brother and sister had officially now been broken.

Now after Arthur had picked off a small group of Harwells men himself, reinforcements arrive. There is no way Arthur could have survived that attack and I am glad the show did not try to show that he could have killed them all single handily cause that would have ruined the whole show. Just when it looks like Arthur could perhaps be done for Leontes and the other appeared. The best horsemanship of the whole season took place right here as Gawain and Kay jumped the horses over the lowest parts of the wall and proceeded to fight on horseback. I’m hoping that will show more mounted fighting next season.

Meanwhile Morgan is preparing to make herself queen and just when it seems like she may actually get the crown the sound of footsteps and hollow clapping fill the hall. Arthur has returned much to the surprise of Morgan who was told her brother was dead. The speech Arthur gives to the people at this point can’t be described with words but in short, it was amazing!! Jamie did such a fantastic job in this episode!!! The ways he moves and speaks grabs you and hold you to him. There is no hesitation just lots of anger and passion, love it!

Their are two deaths of main characters and I must say the second death was quite a shock. I was expecting Leonties to die but not Igraine. And yes I admit it I was not sorry to see Leonties go. Igraine on the other hand, well, i was really starting to like her and Merlin together. Igrane takes the place of Vivian/Nimeh in this show. She is his weakness and with her gone he is powerless deciding to leave Camelot. Perhaps he will lock himself in a hill or cave now lol.

Alright the last 15- 25 minutes of this show were the most amazing and the most intense. So much was relived to us for season 2 and as a student of Arthurian studies and i am so excited for all they are hopefully going to revel. In those final minutes we had the creation of the round table, the fore shadow to the coming of Lancelot, Morgan being stripped of her brother’s name and protection. Sybille was executed by Gawain and MORDRED WAS CONCVIED. I knew Morgan would transform herself into Guinevere to accomplish this but I was not expecting it to be this season. When Gwen showed up at the door to Arthur’s room I legitimately thought it was her, boy was I wrong.

With the execution of Sybil Merlin utters the words “there is no god” with the death of the nun and Leonties we lose the to more Christianized characters in the show. Well ok, the nun was really only a Christian by the clothes she wore, not by her actions. Contrasted with the incest plot it sets a very dark outlook for the next season. Also it was the sprit of the nun who utter the words “you must give birth to a king” to Morgan in the wind giving her the idea that leads to Mordred.

When I saw how Leonties character was portrayed he reminded me so much of Lancelot that’s why I hated him. The spot they placed for Leontes at the round table is not to be filled until a knight just as great comes along and well, I think anyone who knows the legends knows who that is going to be. And when that happened all Arthur has done with Guinevere will be done to him in return.

What made me love the world of Arthuriana as a girl was the way they were shown in the films. What attracted me to the stories before I knew them was how the men were portrayed, how they acted, how they fought and all the things they experienced. It was what the stories showed about human actions and passions. The things that move us to be who we are and follow our own destinies and to choose those fate. Despite what fortune and life throw in are paths. This show showed all that and so much more, and for that I loved it!! Here’s to season two. May it come very soon cause I hate to have to wait till next year in April.-
