The trip back from Idaho is over. Had a lot of quality time with Nick. Got to see new worlds outside of the shell of texas. When we drove around in the mountains, I felt a bit un easy and a little scared. Not because the road conditions where bad or anything, not at that point, but I think it was my small town USA mental reaction to being next to something so big. It was good to see a different part of the world and meet a few different people. The rugged mountain men of Colorado do little to break the stereo types I had in mind. Even saw a handle bar mustache on one of em.
The was snow for days in every direction. Worst parts in Northern New Mexico. Large exspanses filled with nothing but nature and a road cutting right through the middle of it all. Some places felt like a dream, landscapes I'd never thought of before. Semi treacherous roads, and who knows how many untold stories walking around the down town areas of various towns we passed through.
The more new landscapes I saw, the bigger the adventure got. At first, it seemed like the mountains just came out of nowhere and vanished again. Miles went by quick and so did the time. But the closer we got to home, the longer the time went by, especially when we got to texas.
At that point, we were in familiar territory and the adventure was pretty much over.
I actually starting writing on this one back on the 15th. Didn't know where to go from here but it's now the 27th so here goes.
It was a good trip. It functioned very well in a few ways, made me feel like I was out and about being in big places and doing big things. Not a lot happens around here and I don't go many places. But looking back at it all, thinking about all the little towns up in the mountains, surrounded by it all and wondering about the stories of those around us and how those stories are as much of that place as the mountains, I see that my story here is part of this place along with the buildings and people here. Perhaps there's some travelers going through this place and thinking some of the same thoughts and here I am living in this place, plaing out my story as well.
It's good to have Nick around. I'm sure I won't see him for a very long time when he goes off to Korea.
