Novel, day 13

Dec 23, 2011 16:14

I've been meeting to blog about this more regularly, but I've been awful at it. Sorry. So far, it has been going well. I have two main plots. Essentially my story is about the universe dissolving into chaos when basic laws of physics and math break down into chaos. Anomalies become the norm, and entropy increases beyond control. Standard deviation, laws of magnetism and gravity, the rule of large numbers--it all goes out the window.

The chapters alternate between two experiences of this. First, a physics professor named Desmond recovering from the sudden death of his wife and daughter and his friend, a playwright recovering from alcoholism and depression. Second, a young American college student named Lewis studying art in France as he struggles to overcome feelings of loneliness settle the strong romantic/sexual feelings he has for Coralie, a student of French literature at his school and his only close friend.

So far, Desmond's plot has been a little harder to write, but it's coming together well. He's starting to notice--but ignore--the increasing randomness in his life and wrestle with his theology. Lewis and Coralie have a really interesting dynamic. Lewis in particular remains a mystery and continually has a mind of his own and a past that gradually reveals itself.

I have a notebook that I've been using to take notes for future rewrites. So far, I've done some editing, but mostly, I've forged ahead. I try to work on it about two to three hours per day. I'm more or less successful, and can dive into my scenes, taking my time to let the juices flow. I've realized how much I've needed this. It's been thrilling and liberating.

I'll keep you posted on future progress, but so far:
