Prelude no. 1: Hummingbird

The tossing,

teasing,

hummingbird,

buzzing with its blinking wings,

hums as it hurries, zipping through the grass,

diving down into the tangled vines and valleys,

flight forceful, beak flitting, eyes alight,

going faster, smoother, looser-until it sees a flower.

It dives, hovering as still as stone,

its beak reaching in the sepal, sucking sweet and silver nectar,

its wings beating like a blistering metronome,

presto, vivace, prestissimo-done.

And the tossing,

teasing

hummingbird

glints

and glides away.
