Identity

Today at the dinner table one person thought I was an English major, another a theater major, and a third a music major. I've had countless people assume me a philosophy major, another a theology major, another a biology major, another a history major; and one more thought me a visual arts major. No one has ever thought me a JMC major.

I know that it is probably common to have people mistake your major, and I am just a freshman, but it can get troubling after a while. I try not to take it to heart and sometimes I feel somewhat honored, like a guy who rubs elbows with a diverse crowd. Despite trying to ignore it, I feel trapped by paths and titles, like a bit of play-dough too amorphous to fit into a mold, always loosing a bit wherever it's crammed into.

If I could have my way, I would be a philosophizing reader who acts on stage, makes music, talks of Sartre and Lao Tzu in the same sentence as thylakoids and Robespierre, points out pieces of art by Munch hanging on the wall---and writes. Because that's what I am now, and though it can be difficult to straddle two horses, I like it.

Just as long as no one calls me a business major. Then the trouble starts.
