A poem

May 18, 2010 16:42

I take a walk
Along sun-soaked sidewalks,
Holding my breath in my hand.

When the clock chimes ring
I pause and listen to the notes
Rattle on the wind and fade.

I rub my toe into the gritty grass
Because I don’t know what to do.
Is there someplace to be?

I feel my backpack bounce
With philosophy and field guides
Collapsing the air between them.

Is this my time laid bare,
No longer burdened by appointment,
Unfettered?

Rubbing my toe in the grass?
Wandering with no place to go?
Listening to chimes die in the wind?

Surely there is more than this.
I’ll walk this muddy road
Until I see the end.
