Waking up

Feb 28, 2010 10:43

My eyes yawned awake this morning at around 5:00 with a few tentative blinks. A sudden sense of urgency washed my face and made me start. Then, I realized where I was: home. I saw the shadowed ceiling and the model ships along the walls. Turning on my light, I read bit and eventually went back to bed.

As my eyes remained closed, and I hid beneath the covers, I listened to the silence. The snow tiptoed down outside, falling flush with the clean carpet below. My parents shuffled like shadows downstairs, drinking their morning coffee. No cars drove by. No one walked down the hall. No one was cleaning, or using the shower, or opening their door, or throwing up, or yelling.

It's terribly trite, but home is where the heart is.

family, home
