The Worst Jobs For The 21st Century..
Computer Programmers
Software engineers and computer database administrators will see huge gains in their field (at least 40% growth in job creation in both cases, the government says), but computer programmers? Forget about it. Outsourcing and stiff domestic competition for jobs will cause only a 2% growth in this field from 2004-2014, the Labor Department says. In fact, the international language of computer programming means that programmers run an especially high risk of having their jobs outsourced. People looking for a job in this field might want to focus on language-specific certification or cybersecurity programming, the government says. And it goes without saying that programmers should keep abreast of the latest programming languages and technologies.
Working conditions: generally a comfortable office environment; sometimes long hours and weekend work; programmers are susceptible to eye, back and wrist problems due to the amount of time spent in front of a computer.
Median salary: about $63,000
per year.
