Music Collecting

I picked up two soundtracks yesterday at Borders since I had some 30% coupons. I got the score to Pan's Labyrinth and the score to The Fifth Element.

Pan's Labyrinth has a gorgeous score by Spanish composer Javier Navarrete. It's all based around a central theme, a haunting little 25 note lullaby. The music is very subdued and soft with some eerie tones throughout, and a few sweet ones mixed in. Lots of strings, lots of middle woodwinds, a very 'Fairy Tale' feel, which is appropriate to the movie. The movie, if you havent seen it, is one of the most beautiful and yet most depressing things you will ever see. It's a fantastic movie, but it will leave you bawling your eyes out. I reccomend it, still, both the film and the soundtrack. It was listed as 18.99 at Borders in Boston.

Fifth Element has a very electronica and 90s soundtrack, with some occasional middle eastern riffs and beats. It's also marked by having short track lengths, which was one of the reasons why I got it. I figured with shorter lenghts (Most songs are less than 3 minutes long, many less than 2) they would better fit in scenes for shows, and since they are electronica, they'd be easier to loop. Now, the whole thing isnt electronica; and the orchestrations are very nice. Heavy strings, some brass. There are a few tracks that are songs: A Little Light of Love is the theme from the movie, performed by R.X.R.A (no clue). Track 10 is the Ruby Rap, from the film, which is just 2 minutes of Chris Tucker going insane. Track 14 is an exquisite recording of Lucia di Lammermoor, which blends right into trak 15, the Diva Dance. Which, in my opinion, was worth the 13 bucks just to get a cd quality recording of.

They claim that Diva Dance was not digitaly altered, but I dont buy it. I've heard a lot of good opera, and I used to even be able to sing the part, but I've never heard a voice sound like that. I'm not saying that a human cant sing that part, just that it wouldnt sound like how it does on the recording.
