So I kind of held off posting these until I got a chance to listen to Defiant this morning and re read through 52:52. Wanted to have my thoughts together.
Dixie #11: SQUEEE! If Thomas Galen were any cuter, he’d cute his way right out of the radio. This issue was so exciting! I can’t wait until the next! And GEIST IS COMING! Oh lord, I love Volker so much. He brightens my day. The commercial made me laugh as always. Your singing was very nice, Jeffrey!! I want an Umkola. Everyone likes Umkola! Whee next episode is SO going to be worth the two month wait. I’ll be listening to it from Boston! Omg Only 2 months until I move! AHHHH!
Teen Titans #46: DISAPOINTMENT! This issue sucked. I don’t know how else to say it. Complete and total let down. If this is indicative of how the writing is going to go with Adam Beechen, I don’t know if I want to read this book anymore. I’m hoping that it was just awkwardness from switching writers midway through an arc. The fighting was anticlimactic, Bart was completely out of character (Even for his characterization in FMA), Tim was out of character (He’s been trained by Batman to know that sometimes you have to take down your friends. That’s why Bruce has the K-Ring. Also, He would know better than to disrespect Bart by calling him Kid Flash while he was in the scarlet suit. Tim’s better than that, Beechen, and you know it), and the ending was hack. Why bring Joey’s body back if you’re going to just stick him in Match’s body 4 issues later? Seriously. This has made me hope that next issue has Match as the one who ‘dies’. And that is sad. That’s how bad this issue was. But it would make sense, what with having old and new titans looking sad on the cover.
Detective #832: Have I said how much I completely love Paul Dini’s run? Cause I do. He brought back the Terrible Trio! Man, I loved them back on the Animated Series. And there was an actual mystery in this one! And Bruce had a personality! Guh! I love Paul Dini. I cant wait for Countdown!!! This issue is more than worth the buy. Needs more Robin, though…
Checkmate #13: The first in the crossover with Outsiders. Very cool. I’ve not really ever read Checkmate before, and I’m really only familiar with the characters I’ve seen from other books (Fire, Mr Terrific, Amanda Waller) but still. They’re so put together. So efficient. And Sasha was right, you don’t chase after Nightwing, you let Nightwing chase after you. And they named all the Outsiders after doggies! Whee! Uhm… can’t wait until the next issue? Nightwing’s 2 day stubble was really sexy? I miss Roy?
52 #52: Oh. My. God. Wow. Just… Wow. This issue made me cry in 5 different places. For real. Ok, maybe not cry, but my eyes felt all squinchy and full of water like they do right before you cry. First: I take back the bad things I said about Mr. Mind. He turned out to be pretty cool and very well handled. That didn’t make me cry, but it did make me happy. Thing that made me cry 1: THE MULTIVERSE IS BACK! EARTH 2 IS BACK!! EARTH 3 IS BACK!!! KINGDOM COME EARTH HAD KINGDOM COME ART! Guh! This filled me with joy. Oh, Multiverse, how I missed you so. Thing that made me cry 2: BOOSTER AND BEETLE! THIS ONE IS FOR THE BLUE AND THE GOLD! OMG BAWL! Michael had to go back and steal the Scarab, explaining why Ted never had it for so long and why it was so messed up by the time Jaime got it. Thing that made me cry 3: DANNY! GO LONG! OMG SO BOOSTER! Saving the world through football. Thing that made me cry 4: RALPH AND SUE: GHOST DETECTIVES. I take back almost all the bad things I’ve said about how they killed off the Dinbys. This is perfect. They get to be together and doing their thing without the comic book cliché of resurrection. Thing that made me cry 5: Renee scraping the “?” off the signal light and putting the bat signal back on. Her last little message to Kate. God, I cant wait for more Renee as the Question. And I CAN NOT WAIT for the Booster Gold series. I have a feeling this will be my new favorite book. I have no idea when it starts, but I imagine it must be soon.
As for the series as a whole: It was very good in the beginning, it really dragged in the middle, and it was dynamite in the end. I might even go as far as to say that this is how epic comics should be done. In the end of the day, there has been character development: Natasha Irons went from being a kid with a suit to a hero, Renee Montoya went from being a drunk to a detective again, Booster went from spiraling out of control to saving the whole freaking multiverse, Black Adam gained and lost everything, The Society found new strength, Checkmate found new purpose, Wonder Woman learned what it’s like to be human, Superman learned what it’s like to be obsessed, Batman, Robin and Nightwing healed from their emotional and physical wounds to come back better than ever, Captain Marvel finally stood up to the gods and took his place as the Wizard… the list goes on. They even managed to save Skeets. There were, of course, things I didn’t like, but that happens in any series. However, there wasn’t unnecessary killing of main, long standing characters needed to do this.
I think that the real weakness with 52 was that they didn’t have a clear defined story line before they started. Things were evolving out of control with no guideline as they went. I think this is why Countdown will be even better. I’ve read that Dini is running Countdown more like a TV show than a comic book, with himself as the head writer setting down a series bible and guideline and the individual section writers going from that, rather than a round table every month.
Supernatural - Origins #1: Wow!! Yay! WINCHESTERS! This issue was all about John starting on the road to being a hunter. Sam is a baby, Dean is a little kid, and Mary is recently dead. If you like Supernatural, please go out and support this book. If anything, it’s worth the money for the little mini story with Weechesters Sammy and Dean at the end.
Smallville: Noir is probibly the best episode of Smallville this season on techical merit. It was well written, well performed, and you could really tell everyone was having a lot of fun doing it. Aaron Ashmore is so cute as Jimmy. I'm really sick of Lana though. Seriously, I hope she's the one to get the axe in the season finaly, even if I do think it will be Chloe who does.
Defiant #13: Oh My God. Gul Otek made me want to CRY. So saaaad. As always, an amazing performance from Mr. Milan. AND JEFFREY AND RYELL! OMG! HAPPY ENDING! Well for them, at least. Not so much for the Task Force though! EEK! Auran and Keahi made me want to squeee and huggle and squish! And next season we get all out war with the Romulans?! WHEEE! Oh my god I can’t wait for the next round of auditions! I want on this show so bad! There were some great performances from Tom (Classic) and Susan! They’ve really come so far with their acting and presentation of lines. It’s great! This puts me in happy Star Trek land and makes me want to watch Trek episodes now. The scene with T’lar’s big reveal was so OMG GASP! So suspenseful!
I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself next week with no new Pendant to keep me company. I guess I can record lines for Superman and finish the cover for Dixie 12… maybe start the cover for Dixie 13. I’ve already started the cover for Wonder Woman 18, since I had the script still from doing my lines for the realtor part. It’s going to look cool. There’s more up lighting, though. I’m afraid I like the weird lighting looks a little too much. If Jeffrey or Susan could kindly shoot me a copy of WW17, or whatever, I’ll go ahead and get started on that too. It’s my hope to be caught up with having art work done for Dixie and WW up through September or maybe even October before I move in June. I don’t know if I’ll have access to a scanner when I’m in Boston, and I don’t want to have to worry about them when I’m moving and such.
Not that I won’t be available at all when I move! Far from it! I’ll still be on to chat Saturdays in the Pendant Room and on Aim and to do my lines for Dixie and Supes and Kingery and Vegas (Though I don’t think I’ll have any for a few eps so that works) and Johnny Quest over on Broken Sea and I’ll still be auditioning for more stuffs. With the exception of Dixie, because it requires mixing and writing music, I can record lines relatively quickly. I just know that art takes time and I don’t want to risk falling behind. I like to be ahead of the game on things. Procrastination is for losers! Even though… I do it… All the time…. Uhm…. Procrastination is ok sometimes!
Don't forget, everyone! Tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day! Go support your local Comic Book store and make sure you pick up a free copy of Dark Horse Comics presents: Umbrella Academy by Gerard Way!!!
