As to the ending...what do you mean? Do you mean that you don't like the way the plot ran, or that you don't like your final sentences?
Even though I'd guessed he wasn't going to make it, I had a little bit of hope at this bit: The man next to her set a cautious hand on her back and began to rub soothing circles onto her shaking body. I though for a second it would turn out to be Michael--cliché, I know.
I guess by not letting Micheal make it you're showing the inevitability of his death--even Lila knows deep down that she won't see him again, even if she can't admit to herself.
Oops, didn't mean for this to turn into an essay, I just liked it a lot. Excuse my ramblings :o)
