Super-impressed

Camp was awesome. The Zoo was awesome. The Mall of America was awesome, but above all. Superman Returns was awesome. I will continue my mini-review of sorts under the cut.
First off, I just want to say that the casting was brilliant. Kate did an excellent job as Lois, even if she was a bit lacking in the emotionally convincing department. We all have our flaws, and I'll give her time to grow into the role (I'm a hopeful for sequels, but so is Bryan Singer, go read the movie guide.) Kevin Spacey was a brilliant Lex Luthor. Perhaps he wasn't as maniacal as he should have been, but I think the five years hardened him and at the same time softened him. He wants Superman gone, but on a more personal level now, it's not all about world domination by real estate. It's something else, quelling underneath that I, once again, would like to see develop in a sequel. Sam Huntington did an excellent job at the quirky, overly excited Jimmy Olsen and he provided a lot of the comic relief in this film. James Marsden, who is no stranger to Bryan Singer films (he playes Cyclops in the X-men  movies) did a very good job at becoming a new, and extraordinarily likeable character, Richard White. Otherwise known as Lois' husband-to-be, and there for the guy we are all rooting against, no matter how great a person he may be. I liked seeing James as a human rather than a mutant (don't get me wrong, I loved him as Cyclops) and I think he did great. The other actors and actresses were placed wonderfully IMO but the most amazingly placed and rightfully so was Brandon Routh as the role of Superman himself. I, being and Iowa native myself, was especially glad to see him get the role. I was a bit worried at first, to be entirely honest because Routh had done stints on soap operas and I was wondering how he could pull off something as monumental as the Man of Steel. Let me tell you that he did amazing. He effectively put a difference between Clark and Superman, but kept them the same as well. He played the awkward, sweet, honest, reliable Clark with surprising ease and had me hooked, and at the same time he could turn around, pull on the suit and the S-crest and be the smooth, heroic, iconic Superman we all know, love, and have been begging for more of. The movie is packed with action, subplots, hints, turmoil, hard times, happy times, shock, betrayal, and oozing moments that beg for a sequel. Maybe I'm reading the plot to much, but I think that it calls for more to be said. And now, for major spoilage:

Superman has a son. I knew it. The second I saw Lois' son and Clark together they had this look about them and I said to myself  "How much do you want to bet that is Clark's son?" Guess what? It was. It brought on a tear-jerking moment when Superman came back from a very near-death experience ( I was on the edge of my seat thinking "FIX HIM!" repeatedly) and gave his sleeping son a visit and a speech that his father had given him. There were quite a few gasp-worthy moments as well as a few laugh-your-head-off ones.

Call me obsessed (you would be correct) and a fanatic with no real opinion because my judgement is clouded by the pure fandom of it all, but I give this movie 5 stars and two thumbs up. I've seen it twice now (once on the midnight showing and once with some friends who wanted to go) and I love it more every time. Routh gets my uber!seal of approval and Singer gets my praises as well as a fair amount of graveling for him to do another Superman film with the same cast. It was a great storyline, and I would love to see it further itself.
