I haven't been following the story very closely, not being as up on modern games as I should be. Parts of it seem like a created crisis, because it doesn't seem necessary that every game should have a female character. (Like your South Park example: sometimes it just doesn't fit.) I think it is more of a matter of a pattern, and the way the people responded to it.
