Well, in the case of the US version they were very explicit about making it a sci-fi show and dropped hints about the "truth" the entire time. The UK version (which I haven't seen yet, but from what I've read) was really just a cop show with a sci-fi hook (because apparently, they just wanted to make a 70's cop show but the network wouldn't let them).

In fact, I'm so behind on my TV watching that I gave in and read about the end of new BSG.

Well, it was a given after the hate sex episode... I don't think there was really any coming back for the character after stooping that low.
