This rant is dedicated to 8059 doujins.
This started as a detailed comment I’ve sent
hanashiki , who scanlates all those wonderful djs and does a great work, so I owe her (and all Decimo Luce crew) this at the very least. But as it goes with almost all my texts, this went far out of boundaries, and with all illustrations reached 55 pages in Word(mostly for all dj pages, but 2750 words are still here, too), so I decided to brush it a little hell lot more and post as a big guide-classifier-review-whatever thing in
yamagoku too.
Warnings:
For those who encountered it only through my user’s entry via friends page: I’m telling ahead, there will be a lot of R-rated pictures, and of course, yaoi all around, so if you are by any means offended by any of this things, I highly suggest you to stop reading right now.
For everyone: Inevitable random spoilers for dj’s plotlines. Also, rabid fangirling.
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
All credit for scanlations goes to awesome, awesome group Decimo Luce. Go join the community

Credit for “Overjoyed” scanlation goes to

Now, enough with preparations.
As everyone who has read more then three 8059 doujins, I see a blatant difference between styles of different circles.
I can classify it by following criterions:
-General plotline - originality and naturalness.
-Graphics in general - poses and angles.
-Gokudera’s graphics - similarity to canon, badassery, etc.; and character - IC/OOC, guess it’s simple.
-Yamamoto’s graphics and character - the same.
-Special marks of particular circle.
Of course, there can be further classification, but I’m too lazy to think it through.
So, let’s check the circles.
Middle Range.
Holy Madonna, no one knows how hard I suck for Middle Range. IMO, it’s THE best 8059 circle.
Wonderful plotlines, with the right amount of humour, tension and emotions to fit into Yamagoku. Nothing overdramatic, that looks just way over the line.
I’ve read Overjoyed, Glorious Revolution (all parts), Jitterbug, Speciale and Stay Away, and have no complaints at all.
Favorites?
Overjoyed was the first one I’ve read. It is fun, and really cute, even if I hate this word, and makes you adore them even more.
And
Glorious Revolution, which at least for me is the best 8059 dj ever. I can read it, and then reread, look at different angles, and bubble inside from overflowing 8059 love. I will post later a separate post in my journal reviewing the whole doujin from beginning to the end, because it’s worth it.
The graphics doesn’t disappoint too, I love their the most - through slightly different from the canon, it still holds it’s flow, with amusing remarks and charming little scenes all over.
[See my point? The author could probably start her own manga with her sense of picture.]
And they draw hands in absolutely awesome way. I’m in love with MR hands.
[I have a thing for people's hands and wrists in particular, and look at this awesome chuckles. And I'm not going to talk about wristbones now, in sake of my remaining sanity]
Gokudera’s look is cool,
TYL!Gokudera can make you wet your panties,
[FFFFUCK, OVERKILL.]
And he’s still witty, smart and snorting Gokudera from KHR we all know and love. He’s bony, but looks healthy, it also ads to positives.
[*foams a little* Ok, I could spam all post by Middle Range’s TYL!Gokudera pictures, but enough with wanking]
Yamamoto’s design is just brilliant,
[REALLY, ENOUGH WITH WANKING, BITCH. Here, have adorable Yamamoto instead.]
they completely and flawlessly transmit his character through graphics, and his expressions are awesome - the ones where he blushes, or indicates how much he likes Gokkun, or just does something stupid.
[I can’t pick out what exactly they do with his expressions, but they have a magnificent result in the end. Every single one causes exactly those emotions I want him to feel at the moment]
They both are completely in character, and stay like this in all scenes - even during sex and such, 59 stays 59, and 80 stays 80. The most genius one is in second and third parts of Glorious Revolution - 80 blushing, open and offering, so kind your teeth ache; and 59 is flustered, embarrassed, reluctant, but willing.
[Most awesome sex scene ever. I’m not going to continue this thought further, we would be stuck for like three hours with this alone here.]
What I like the most, 80 isn’t completely seme, and 59 isn’t completely uke, it just happens that Yamamoto screws Gokudera, and not other way around
In general, any Middle Range doujin can totally make my day.
Oh, and when they add Uri, it just makes everything more fucking awesome.
[Uri is love to the extreme, and additional OHFUCK for TYL!Gokudera. ]
Nikushoku.
Second in my ranking of favorites.
Graphics is outstanding, there’s no doubts. They do everything with attention to details, and every panel, every figure looks complete, be it yakata ornament or hair pattern.
[Check out how complete each panel looks]
Also, they carefully think about poses, so there are a lot of panels with original angles.
[Basically, whole page shows one scene in progress, second by second, it just changes angle of view from panel to panel]
They are also very good with anatomy.
[Yamamoto’s torso and shoulders are flawless. YAMAMOTO WHY SO SEXY]
Plotlines are also the best, they always get through you. They often bring out mature themes, such as in Nella Pioggia Intensa or in Summer Vacation or in Over the Time.
But they also know, that old good dirty always works, and spoil us with something like Houkago wa Betsu no Kao, with sex against a mirror and scandalously erotic poses.
[Hurhurhur, that’s really dirty ^ ^. I approve.]
But even then they know how to pull it out, and find the perfect balance - I like the plot of Koibito Ijio Tomodachi Miman as very, very natural and endearing. I’m absolutely content with their plotlines.
I’m not sure I really like Yamamoto’s graphics everywhere; sometimes they draw him too rudely, but it’s bearable, and his face expresses exactly those emotions that I think they should express.
[They know what they want to see in the end, and professionally work with mimics. I suppose the artist has very good pro education.]
Their TYL!80 is gorgeous.
[dlskdvs;lkdfhvbs;flkbsd]
And Gokudera is always good, beautiful, even, and adorable - just look at his lips.
Their work on his expressions is outstanding.
They often make him a little more uke then I would to, but, guess, it can’t be helped, and it always has it’s explanations in the plot, so I’m okay with this.
[last panel, OMG OMG OMG. I think I nearly came too]
At times, of course, they overdo it a little.
[HAHAHAHAWTF?! Big and scary?! And what's with nine-year-old boy look?!]
Yamamoto, too, is a little pushier then he should be, but always kind and loving, in character, so it’s fine.
[*scratch, schrug* Well, at least he felt guilty after]
Also, they are both very intelligent in every dj, which adds to positives.
Their style evolved massively from early djs to later ones: at first Yama wasn’t so seme, was drawn closer to canon, Gokkun was stronger and there was a lot of humour sprawled everywhere.
Eventually, that changed and resulted into two directions we have now:
-the ones about present 8059, with a fair amount of teenage smut and simple - through not at all bad, mind you, drama;
[S'up, J-Drama!]
-more deep, psychological ones about TYL!8059.
My most favorite are early ones, through TYL!8059 are also precious.
And I’m completely in love with their early doujin - Be Close To Me Ever After. It’s the only version of TYL!5980 that I’ve seen besides canon, and it’s breathtakingly charming that someone had thought about it before canon TYL!forms were revealed.
[Yeah, these are alternate TYL!versions, behold.]
TYL!Gokkun there is absolutely adorable, and the whole book is full of love.
[Srsly, he's so hippie here, lol]
And humour, here and there, such as when Gokudera makes a blowjob and thinks “Ten years worth of payback right here.”
[ Gokudera, you sneaky bastard. And Yamamoto’s expression on first panel is precious.]
I should say, Nikushoku doujins are full of humour, different from gorgeous Middle Range’s, but still are pretty funny.
[Ahaha, TYL!Yamamoto wins at life]
And they skillfully use Tsuna as comic relief here and there, making him embarrassed about 8059’s displays of attentions.
Uohsaoh.
Predictably, the third place.
I’ve read only three translated doujins - White Bunny to Black Rabbit, Gokubirth rabbit and Mudai, untranslated Zookeeper, and a couple of stories from anthologies, but I like their art style. It’s a little odd and pointy, but, somehow, very good, and suits 8059 a lot.
They are equally good with humour - I mean, I was laughing my ass out at rabbits,
and surprisingly good with serious stuff - Mudai really made me skip a heartbeat.
I can’t seriously talk about characters - the rabbits are in the end one great gag,
[Ahaha, OTL.]
but a least in Mudai everything looked natural and very endearing,
[I like the choice of words, their expression, the fact that Yamamoto kisses Gokudera’s hand.]
Save for the fact that 59 is, once again, very uke, and Yamamoto is very seme, but they keep it only when it comes to sex, so it’s bearable.
And their character graphics is wonderful! Equally for 14-year old
[I especially love Yamamoto’s mischievous expression and how they drew his hand here.]
And 24-year old ones.
Also, D18 cameo in WBTBR is awesome, loved it.
[ILU Dino, you’re so lame]
They also mix it with ridiculous little moments, even in the end of Mudai, and that’s a big plus.
Awesome.
NALIS.
I must confess here. I don’t actually like NALIS.
Their graphics is very special, extended and often off key, with always typical and recognizable faces of 59 and 80, but that would be okay, if it was the only minus.
[Their limbs scare me. Srsly.]
I absolutely can’t agree with characters interpretation. They make 59 a permanent shrink patient, with no inner will whatsoever, with terrible mental disorders - not that he hasn’t mental disorders, but nothing so big and unnatural - and no logic at all. All he does is making random contradictory things, making pointless offenses, for no reasons developing a huge inner break, based on madly loving Yamamoto(ZOMG My first love I've wanted you forever yada yada) and simultaneously pushing him away.(ZOMG Those stupid emotions I can't afford myself to be that weak go away after you have fucked me until I can't walk at all)
He actually appears very dumb, girly and all around helpless, not to forget they draw him so skinny it’s just scary.
[Aside from smoking, if you change “anime” to “canon” and “original” to “NALIS”, they themselves got my point perfectly illustrated.]
And Yamamoto - I keep asking myself, is it the same Yamamoto from KHR we all love. Who are you, violent brutal beast, who thinks only of hard sex?
[Yeah right. So Yamamoto-ish. In other news, he also kicked Squalo in the balls instead of trying to save his life during that Varia fight.]
I wonder if 80 could be any more OOC. His graphics reflects it, too, and it makes me love it even less.
And what about the whole S&M thing?
The general plot of any NALIS essentially consists of these parts, not necessarily in this order:
-Yamamoto pushing Gokudera towards sex;
-59 all broken and inwardly torn apart;
[Gokudera: Behold, I'm so emo right nao]
-The Drama;
-few scenes involving Goku crying and running away, crouching against the wall with a cigarette;
[Gokudera: must act emo emo emo]
-Yamamoto with a face of seasoned violator;
-finally, some climax scene, followed by 80 brutally raping 59, I can’t find any other words about it;
[Now, let's make it clear. I'm not against porn. Shit, I LOVE porn. But can this at least try to resemble Yamagoku?!]
-then, or maybe earlier - Goku’s emo thoughts about how much his body and soul are changing.
All mixed up with srzbzns breakdowns, strange emotions that look pulled out of the ass, and out of place graphics that doesn’t make it better.
Actually, there are only two NALIS djs that I genuinely like - Konji (Road to Love) and Princess Hayato. Both look slightly uncharacteristical for NALIS, lol, maybe, that is what makes me like them.
[Yamamoto doesn’t look like a pedobear, at least, and genben!Gokudera is funny. Makes a rather decent princess, actually. Also, historical costumes are SEX.]
And Ten Years After too, at least partially. This scene looks absolutely IC and touching for me.
I have to say that even if I dislike NALIS, I acknowledge the author as a famous and respected 8059 artist (after all, I’m unable to draw an apple decently, so basically I have no rights to criticize. But I still do, because I’m impudent like that ^ ^), and I admit that her works do become better and better.
Generally, I’ve reviewed four circles that produce the most of 8059 doujins.
Of course, I’ve read other circles works too, like
-Apricot Guns (funny graphics, good plotlines, and I would like to read all remaining parts of Silent Karma <3),
[I especially approve of the fact that Gokudera DOESN’T blush.]
-DKB (weird manner of drawing, but awesome work at expressions),
[Faces are off-model, but somehow they perfectly catch every expression.]
-Matreshka (it’s apparent that they follow Nikushoku’s art style, but it looks good and their plotlines are funny. I also approve of the fact that they have stable universe where every character belongs to his place, like Lambo being Tsuna’s secretary)
[Read the text once more, it wins. I look forward for more their djs.]
And some others that I like, but guess one or two doujins are not enough for me to make enough impression to form a detailed opinion that wouldn’t be a simple doujin review.
And now, some random doujin comments.
1. Ok, maybe I’m not getting something here. The typical thing for sex in almost every doujin I’ve read, that they start with one standing on his knees/pressed to the wall/whatever, the other enter from behind, and then, after a while, the other flips the first one around in one swift motion, conveniently, without even exiting him.
[Flick! Like this]
I may not be that experienced with buttsex, but I’m rather experienced with classic one, and practice yoga for more than one year, and still, it’s a fucking miracle for me HOW THEY MANAGE THIS. I demand an answer, because aside of it being borderline impossible without exiting, it should be VERY painful - take in calculations friction force and stuff (blah. what a terrible pun)
2. They always do this thing with saliva connecting their mouth after a kiss. It’s hot alright, but sometimes looks rather out of place
[Dude. It’s a touching scene, culmination of story, violins on the background, we all are about to sniff and Gokudera is sniffing already. WTF does this thing do here?!]
3. I guess it’s a universal rule that a uke should be as naked as possible; when seme should lower his pants just a little? Like being manly and shit.
[Once again, hai thar, acrobatics!]
That’s rather funny, because actually it makes him looking more opened. Sexy, nevertheless.
4. This fucking scares the shit outta me.
No, it’s not a random horror manga, it’s one of 8059 doujins, from anthology.
5. Yamamoto often addresses Gokudera by third face. “Gokudera is the witty one”, “I want to be friends with Gokudera”, etc. I don’t remember this manner on him from manga. Is this a thing of translation or something?
OK, I think now it’s time to finish this, because it somehow became colossal again. I think it’s genetically impossible for me to talk short.
With my love to illustrating every detail, if one day I’ll have enough resolve and time to lay my hands on the ship manifesto, it will be possible to publish it separately as a monograph.
I’m dying now; I spent all weekend flicking through my dj collection picking out examples, rewriting text, editing pictures size, and now spent two hours uploading this. But I can’t say I’m not satisfied.
Thank you for reading this till the end. Really.
