Playing around with those often garish artificial dyes, like a child with a paint-pot; as the shapes become more extravagant, the materials become less attractive.

Hahah, I agree for the most part. Some of the dresses of this period are so horrendous with their tassels and tree-bark silk. But I like some of these - the printed silks and cottons particularly. The striped evening gown with a lace bertha just gets me every time I look at it.

Yes, some of the prints are nice. But some colours from this period can be spectacularly ugly, especially some scarlets, greens and purples (also a particular kind of mauve which must be the most appalling dye ever invented).

Do you by any chance mean those horrendous gowns in the V&A? I'm a massive fan of that collection but I confess I cringe when I see the vivid colours on display on some of the gowns of the 1860s and 70s! Although it's no worse than most of the things to be seen in shops nowadays.
