President Obama acted stupidly . . .
. . . by first admitting that he was not there and did not know all of the facts of the Gates case, but then going on and saying that the Cambridge Police "acted stupidly." And now he is compounding his own stupidity by standing by his earlier statement. The closest he came to repudiating his previous words was to say that "everybody should have just settled down and cooler heads should have prevailed." Yet he doesn't go as far as to say that if the police acted stupidly, so did Mr. Gates. In the original press conference, he started well by saying he didn't know all the facts. That is where he should have taken his stand. He should have said, "I am sure this is going to be investigated thoroughly, and I am not going to comment in advance of the findings of that investigation." The only people who are going to be pleased with his prejudicial analysis are those who take the totally racist position that every arrest of a black by a white policeman is racially motivated.
