Today I saw not one, not two, but THREE yes THREE yes (count 'em folks) THREE shows. None of which was I familiar with.
Firstly: Spring Awakening. A new musical/rock-opera adaption of the German book/play, and incredible. A cast of about 12, a brutal coming of age story of teen angst and sex and tragedy and revolution, and the most incredible music I can remember hearing since I was first introduced to Rent. I bought the cd, all must listen, all must adore.
Secondly: Butley. This I only saw because it starred Nathan Lane. And seemed only to exist to give Nathan Lane something to do. Tragi-comic story about an English College professor whose life is pretty much destroyed in a single day. Not much in the way of story, but some brilliant rantish monologues for NL who got laughs for just about everything he did. Including drinking. Especially drinking. It ends tomorrow so I'm glad I got to see it.
Thirdly/Lastly: Evil Dead: The Musical. I cannot be emphatic enough about this. The absolute funniest thing I have ever, ever, ever seen. My face hurts I was laughing so much. It's the story of
The Evil Dead, plus sequels in a bastardised sort of way, set to ridiculously cheesy music (songs like 'All the men in my life get killed by Candarian Demons'), and basically taking the piss out of
The Evil Dead. Every time a memorable catchphrase from the film was uttered, the dude playing Ash would take two huge steps, plant his feet and stare directly at the audience in a heroic pose.
The best thing about it was the blood effects. The front five rows of the audience were completely covered with blood by the end of it. There was a Demon Slaying dance sequence strangely reminiscent of the musical episode of Buffy (oh that's right, Hinton Battle(Sweet) was the coreographer), and the whole thing was just so damn tacky!! Everyone, go and buy a ticket to New York, then see this show. IT'S THAT GOOD!!!
Now I really need sleep. I can barely stand. I may take tomorrow off Broadway. Not as in Off-Broadway, but just take tomorrow off. You get it.
