So over the course of a week in which the topic of mortality has been very much on my mind, I finished watching Moonlight. And, well,
while it's still kind of goofy, I found it grew on me over time (and like I said, really not a vampire fan usually). It's dark as hell, though, and I still couldn't really get over the fact that Mick knew Beth when she was four years old - just, no. I think 90% of the fact I did enjoy parts of it is down to the charm of O'Lough and the way he and Dohring totally sold the whole ridiculousness. They both have a cool way of expressing the physicality of the vampires - it's almost reptilian at times, especially in the way they move their heads. And as the show goes on, it becomes easier and easier to read the whole thing as queer allegory, with Mick (Alex) always uncomfortable with who he is, constantly seeking a cure, a return to a "normal" life, and Josef (Dohring) as the older, more experienced vampire, completely accepting of his identity. The allegory becomes pretty in your face when they have a scene after Josef turns Mick for the second time, and Mick teasingly calls him "Dad" - mirroring the "Uncle" role that older gay men historically played in initiating younger men into "the life".
Uh, yeah. They look at each other like this a lot.
And they touch a bit, too.
By the way, if you haven't seen the whole scene where Josef turns Mick, you really should go
check it out, because holy fuck, that's homoerotic. Just a couple of caps to give you an idea:
And then we have the scene where Mick and Josef have a threesome of sorts.
Ahahaha, and then they get caught by Beth. OOOPS.
Yeah, remember how I said I wasn't into vampires? Alex makes it sort of hot. BIG SURPRISE THERE, RIGHT?
Even with the hair, Alex is still adorable.
And a little bit dorky.
Yeah, I guess I could put up with the sideburns and the hair.
It'd be a hardship, but I could force myself.
