The fannish year in review

Dec 26, 2009 14:47

Yeah, in case you missed the ten million posts of squee, it would seem that the main fannish headline for me this year was that I was sucked headlong into the vortex that is Merlin fandom. I resisted for a handful of months because god, they were just so young, and then in February it all went to hell when I saw the first episode. I don't think I've been this fannish about a fandom since Trek way back in the 80s, and then it was tempered a bit by the lack of instant access to tons of interviews, vids, fanfic, etc., etc. I have one story I'm hoping to finish within the next couple of weeks, but since I doubt it'll be finished by the 31st, I might as well do this now.

Stargate: Atlantis

I'm sad to say I think I've pretty much shot my wad in this fandom. I still love the boys and read them occasionally, but I can't see myself doing anything apart from the odd short piece from here on in. However, I think I had a pretty good run - four years and nearly 100 stories (and I don't even want to guess at how many words), and lots of good friends and good times.

It's Magic - written for crysothemis, who won me in the livelongandmarry auction, this is based on Doris Day's first movie. Yes, I made John Sheppard Doris Day. I'm sure there's a special place in Hell waiting for me. :)

Very Improper - A short piece for one of the Porn Battles.

Home Improvement - The boys being domestic.

Solve For x - A little piece that received a big reception from people. :)

In Plain Sight - Another story of John and Rodney kicking back.

The Ways of Earthlings - John was pretty good company for a lizard.

Creation Myth - Written for
tex, a short companion piece to our collaboration Two Men and a Baby.

due South

The Best-Laid Plans - Written for
bethbethbeth. Ray has a plan.

Live Free or Die Hard

Sugar Daddy - A short piece written for one of the porn battles, in which Matthew introduces John to a new kink.

Always a Bridesmaid - A standalone story I wrote for the wonderful sonia6349, in which Matt and John ease into a relationship with a few bumps along the way.

Merlin

The Common Touch - My first Merlin fic, with a cover created by the talented nicci-mac.

Incentive Plan - Arthur may not be a model employer, but at least he provides fringe benefits. The podfic was recorded by the amazing
nny.

Accept No Substitutes - Written for the Merlin Flashfic "Made them Do It" challenge.

Above and Beyond - A short fic inspired by nicci-mac's delicious art that was also podficced by
nny.

Gone Fishing - An Arthur-finds-out story.

Defenders of the Realm - Written for Merlin Big Bang, this modern AU was a bitch to get in under the deadline but an absolute joy when I could finally say IT'S DONE AND YAY IT KIND OF WORKED. :) Having such beautiful art created by ras-elased and wheres-walnut, and having the help and support of awesome betas and cheerleaders made this a wonderful experience. And then to have it podficced by pandarus was the extra nummy icing on an already nummy cake.

Traditional Remedy - A short piece written for ras-elased's kissing meme.

Something About You - A modern AU in which Arthur, fresh from a breakup, brings home a bloke he meets at a club. Written for cherrybina's rimming meme.

Revelation - Shaving porn, basically. :)

And coming in January, (I hope), a story based loosely on the 1939 movie Bachelor Mother, in which store clerk Ginger Rogers finds a baby at Christmas and ends up as the de facto mother. YES I AM MAKING MERLIN GINGER ROGERS. SHUT UP.

Merlin RPF

Yeah, I don't even know. *facepalms* My only explanation is that I have no shame when it comes to these boys - they're utterly adorable both as themselves (their public personas, that is) and as their characters. Writing about Bradley and Colin has become nearly as addictive as writing about Merlin and Arthur.

A Questionable Quest - a story stuffed with crack, crisps, and Bradley being bloody-minded.

Home Truths - A short sequel to A Questionable Quest, set around the time of the Soccer Six tournament.

Stanslavski Never Said Anything About Frocks - Crossdressing!Bradley. That's really all you need to know.

Untitled comment porn - written with chibirhm.

Karaoke, Sport of Kings - A cracky idea that ended up being much longer and more - well, more - after the various events from the Road Trip of Awesome to the BAFTA event left my head spinning from the sheer epicness of the B/C bromance.

Vids

2009 is also the year I started dabbling in vids. It's something I've wanted to do for a very long time, and finally being able to do it is a blast.

Should I Stay or Should I Go - Merlin/Arthur, Merlin POV.

J'ai l'rock 'n' roll pis toé - a Bon Cop Bad Cop vid to the immortal Offenbach song.

Any Time At All - Merlin/Arthur, Merlin POV.

And of course, there is the as-yet-unnamed Yuletide fic, which I wrote in an as-yet-unnamed fandom, to be revealed January 1st. :) So all in all, not a bad fannish year overall for creativity, and though there was an ending, there was also a beginning, which seems to be the way things go all over.
