J and I watch Doctor Who, but we've never been particularly fannish about it, and for once I'm grateful I couldn't get that invested in a show, because
wow, Who fandom seems to be exploding right now.
Like I said a couple of days ago, I'm not the biggest fan of Moffat, but I don't care enough to really be pissed off at the guy, merely frustrated at yet another showrunner who Doesn't Get It. Both J and I got massively fed up with S6 after The Girl Who Waited, so we haven't seen the last three eps of S6 or the first ep of S7. We dipped our toes in with Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, and overall we liked it, mainly for the crack factor. I wasn't crazy about the fact that Amy can't hold a job and seems to hang around waiting for the Doctor to show up, or the way Rory made icky-poo gay-cooties faces after the Doctor planted one on him, or the fact that the Queen of All Egypt ends up in a tent with the stereotype of the Great White Hunter (but hey, I explained it away by saying it's Rupert Graves, whatever), but overall it was okay.
However, now that I'm seeing stuff like
this (and yes, I realize that dedicating an entire tumblr to your hatred of Moffat is a little obsessive, so I'll have to eventually watch these damn episodes for myself), and I'm thinking, wow, yeah, there really is a difference in the way Rusty Davies characterized Who as opposed to Moffat. Like I said, I'm not an avid enough fan to have spotted all those inconsistencies and plot holes, but when taken all together, it's more than a little annoying. I, too, saw the promo and thought the "Who do you think?" line meant that Amy was the answer to that question - to find she's not is beyond annoying, and shows how far apart female fen and Moffat are in their visions for this show and their expectations for its characters. And the "Plus, she’s a woman" line - what the fuck, did that actually happen? (I know, I know, watch the episode - but my rage threshold is very low right now). Ugh, IDK, sometimes I just want to take large portions of the entertainment industry and chuck it through a window. This might be one of those times.
And I'm also sad to say that my opinion of Amanda Abbington in all of this has been diminished a bit. She's jumped into the fray in much the same way that I've seen not terribly mature fen jump into wankstorms, with lots of colourful language (which is fine, I'm in a glass house where that's concerned, but
not when tweeting twelve-year-olds, geez) and knee-jerk defences of friends without knowing the issues. Now apparently she's received
death threats for what she's said, which yes, is totally out of order, but she's been engaging with fandom for a while now - is she not aware that there are some emotionally unstable people out there? Is she not aware that Twitter has machinery in place for either blocking or reporting such offenders? And is she not aware that the most egregious offenders she's dealing with are really not worth engaging directly? Well, clearly not, obviously, but it's still disappointing. And again, I'm in a glass house on that, so I'll shut up with regards to that, though I will add that "if you don't like it, shut it off" only holds so much water when you're dealing with one of the most beloved shows in UK TV history, a show for which a lot of people feel ownership that goes much further back than Moffat's short tenure. Anyway, bottom line, I'm a little glad I'm not in Who fandom at the moment, because in sum: OUCH.
I can't imagine why anyone would want to, but just in case: Newsletters, please do not link. :)
